he is a lovely baby, very cuddly and very curious, but gets very cross very quickly when i have to put him down. he is heavy and i am not keen to back sling him whilst i cook but i am wondering whether he will grow out of it with reassurance or what strategies to use.

he is my first client, he comes all day once a week and from half eleven twice a week. sometimes not well napped, only naps 40-60 mins at a time and often seems tired. been with me 6 weeks and after first 2 weeks when he was quite calm has been happy when being held/focused on but very hard not being able to go to loo/get food/see to other (my own 3 under 6's) or my older mindees. i don't leave him alone in the room and keep talking/singing to him. he is perfectly once i pick him up.

help!!

can you strap him into hi chair whilst you cook, with toys or board books, so that he can see you?

I keep up a never ending stream of chat when out of eyeshot (poor kids, my dulcet tones !)

It IS a phase and will soon pass

thank you, yes i do put him next to me inhighchair or even buggy with tiys/snacks. it worked well in early days-now just seems very angry.

it will pass......

I have something like this www.mothercare.com/Bright-Starts-Bounce-Baby/dp/B004EYGRLE?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_32&nodeId=530227031&sr=1-32&qid=1328824006 and can be great for children who like to be up and not yet able to walk it is also great to wear them out so they sleep well. Is great for that ten minutes you need your hands for.

ooh yes, you might be able to borrow something like that from your Toy Library (if your Council has one in the Early Years dept)

My DC3 is 9 months old and that describes her to a T. She's usually particularly grumpy when I'm making the dinner at about 5 and she's not a great napper either. We've a jumparoo too, but she's not great in that either.
I find the high chair with particularly messy snacks - jelly, pasta and sauce, hummous and pitta works well.
She also is generally okay if i can get the older two to play with her - although I've got to make sure the little lego and the marbles are safely stowed away.
