How does a nanny become Ofsted registered?

Hi all, can I pick someone's brains please?

Our nanny is having another baby and won't be coming back to work after.

As our needs have changed, we now only need an after school nanny 3 or 4 days a week. I need a nanny, not a childminder, as I have an older child too and I need the childcare to be in my house.

I'm going to advertise, but am aware that not all applicants may be Ofsted registered. I want them to be for the Insurance and CRB aspects, and also because I'd prefer to pay with childcare vouchers. I am happy towards contributing toward any registration costs for the right person.

Can anyone tell me how someone would go about becoming registered, and possibly how long it may take?

Many thanks.

I am just doing this with the nanny I am employing. This is helpful: www.nannytax.co.uk/nannies/the-ofsted-register/registration-criteria(sorry on iPhone and not sure about links)

My nanny just did this. She applied mid November and got registered after 2 weeks! Maybe it helped that a CRB had already been done recently. Previous attempts to register other nannies have taken 3-6 months.

We paid for her to do her childcare course and first aid course, and we paid the registration costs, but not for her time during weekends when she did the courses. She arranged and paid for her insurance. We had agreed to give her a 10% payrise on registration (to give her incentive and in compensation for the weekend courses), and we are still better off for being able to use the vouchers.

Over the last few years, I have found very few applicants are Ofsted reg (and if they are, my advice would be to agree in advance who is paying for renewal of first aid & reg). My preference would have been for applicants to have done at least a recent first aid, childcare course and got insurance, but I've found that hardly any applicants have all of these.

My unofficial guide to registration may be of help.

The official Ofsted guide to registration and the Factsheet: Requirements will also be of help.

Sometimes the biggest hurdle is the qualification requirement:
a qualification at a minimum of level 2 in an area of work relevant to the childcare, or successfully completed training in the core skills as set out in the document Common Core of skills and knowledge for the children?s workforce.

Old qualifications may not meet common core requirement, so an update course may be necessary. It is hard to know when such an update course is needed, though qualification search may help show when an update is suggested.

that's a good website Nick - I'll have a proper look through.

Novstar - I'm expecting to struggle to get an after school nanny who's already Ofsted register as well.. I would like to pay by vouchers, so I am going to try and facilitate as much as I can.

jamdoughnut - thanks for the link.
