How much for Live out nanny in Romford, Essex

Hi guys - I've been trawling through previous threads - just want to know if anyone has an idea how much a live out nanny would be per hour (gross wage) in Essex? I'm currently in the process of looking for a live out nanny for two days a week and a bit at a loss to decide how much is a middle of the road rate? DD 3yrs and DS 8 months. Usual nanny stuff - entertain kids, kids meals, and some light housework (kids stuff). Not too bothered about qualifications per say - some experience and speak english (doesn't have to be mother tongue. Any ideas???

As you will have seen from other threads, there can be things that affect the salary that someone might offer, if advertising a job without the salary being mentioned. The level of experience that a nanny has could well be a factor - someone who is coming from a nursery background and is moving to nannying may well accept a lower salary than a nanny who has been nannying for 6 years or more.

Personally I far prefer it when parents advertise a job at a set salary. It shows to me that the parents have thought about what they can afford to pay and are looking for someone who will accept the job on the basis of the salary offered.

Some ways of trying to establish market rates in your area:

  1. Search nannyjob for jobs in your area advertised by agencies and parents. With luck some will give a salary indication.
  1. Search general jobs in your area on recruitment sites like Reed and JobSite. Look at jobs in other sectors such as Retail and Healthcare. Try to find similar jobs which require a similar level of qualification (if you want a qualified nanny), so NVQ Level 3 for example.
  1. Use sites like Greatcare to look up nursery jobs in your area. That may help get an idea of nursery staff wages in your area. Nannies are typically paid more than nursery staff.

Calculate how much you can afford to pay. No point in advertising a job if you can't afford to pay the wage. PAYE Calculator will help to see what an hourly rate is as annual, annual rate as hourly, plus what Employers NI would be due. Leave some room between what you can afford and what you offer, so that you can give a payrise at a future point, once the nanny has proved themselves, or at annual pay review stage.

Make sure that you are complying with National Minimum Wage regulations. You can't offer a salary below NMW for someone who is Live-out. Shouldn't be a problem there as nannies tend to be paid above NMW.

nannynick very helpful advice thank you - I'm new to this as DD was in full time nursery(straightforward) but now I'm going back to work after 2nd baby so we wanted a split of nursery and nanny ( 2days a week) so that we don't have to rush around getting two ready to leave the house at the crack of dawn!

I believe that the latest nanny salary survey is made public on Monday... that may help give some indication of salaries.

Last years version (so wages table for 2010) can be seen here. Live-out, outer london/home counties, around £29,000 gross for full time - unknown hours but in 40 to 60 a week range is likely. So could well be around the £10 gross per hour mark typically.

I would be suspect you would need to offer in the range of £7 to £13 gross per hour. However, do look at it as being an Annual Salary, as you will be paying all year round, not just when the nanny is physically at work. Hope that makes sense.

So if say you were to offer £9 gross per hour... and it was say 22 hours over 2 days, then you could be looking at a cost to employer of around £10,800 (salary plus Employers NI) plus then the other costs on top.

Would you not be rushing around the house getting children ready for nursery, on the nursery days?

Yes other three days would be rushing around getting the kids ready for nursery. It is just to give us more convenience for at least 2 day - we don't have capacity for a live-in nanny - and a full time live out nanny would be too costly. Quick question regarding holiday entitlement - I understand for 2 days it would be 11.2 days A/L - but is the nanny entitled to it as soon as they start to work or do they "earn" a set number of days for set number of months worked (if that made sense)

Think you mean the accrual method of doing holiday.

See this PDF from ACAS which mentions different methods of calculating employees holiday. The accrual system can only be used for First Year. So I don't feel it's necessary to run that method.

The employer (you) has the right to decide when their employee takes holiday. So your employee (your nanny) request holiday, and you decide to approve it, or deny it. That way you keep control of when they take holiday and how much holiday they have. You can give more holiday than the statutory minimum, you cannot give less.

If you do not require them to work on a bank/public holiday that falls on their working day, you need to decide if that is taken as part of their statutory holiday, or if it is in addition to the statutory holiday. I suggest you sit down with a calendar and work out what bank/public holidays will fall on working days during the next couple of years. Then you can discuss the situation with your nanny.

Good to hear that you are planning to agree a Gross wage with your nanny.

yes definitely gross salary and it's doesn't seem to be problem as I'm not using any agencies so like you said I'll figure out what I can afford and then offer that as a gross salary.

Hello Romford Mums!

I hope you don't mind me asking but I am a babysitter and was wondering where you find your babysitters? Where shall I sign myself up?

Would love to hear from you!
