CM Club: question regarding 4yr olds in full education

I heard somewhere that if a 4yr old is in full time education then they are classed as a 5yr old, is this true? I ask because I have had an enquiry about a three year old and I have no vacancies but if the above question is true then I have a vacancy from next week.

I'm pretty sure that's the case but hopefully someone else will be here soon to confirm for sure

They only count as an over five if they attend 10 sessions a week, ie, all day, all week.

Our reception class starts off with mornings only so the 4 year olds still count as under fives for half a term. after half term they go all day and then count as over fives.

then yes she counts as a five year old but you need to get your certificate ammended before you can take on another child. Depending on your area it can take a while as they have to send you the new wording and then leave it 2 weeks for you to object before they issue the certificate

babydales · 18/01/2006 21:28

Why would you have to get your wording changed? Surely if you have a space then you have a space!
Once a child attends full time school they are classed as 'Rising 5' and do not count in your under 5's ratio, therefore if you are registered for 3 under 5's , once your four year old starts school then you have a vacancy, no need to change anything surely.

Childminding Guidance - Revisions, Version 2 (Feb 2004)

The following factor is taken into account when deciding on the number of children that appears on your certificate:
? whether any of the children attend ten early education sessions a week, for example in reception classes, nurseries or pre-schools

I can't see that you would need an amendment to your certificate, as total number of under 8's wouldn't change, unless it already stated the child by name due to another reason. If it were your own child, then once they turn 8, notify Ofsted as you may get an amendment to number of under 8's you can care for, as your child is no longer counted in the ratio.

To be safe, you could always write in to Ofsted to tell them that the child is attending ten education sessions, thus you now consider them to be in you 5 to 8's ratio.

The ten full-time education sessions have to be proper school though, not nursery. I know of a childminder who was convinced that she could have an extra child because she had a 4 year old at full-time nursery (she called it nursery "school" and therefore reckoned it was the same thing - it's not.

Thanks all, She's in the foundation class at a 'proper' school 9 till 3.15, I think I will email ofsted to let them know of my circumstances and see if they come back with any other advice.
