What's the best childcare solution for someone working random hours?

I'm thinking of returning to work, but my new job (if i get it) would be part time with some regularity, but also some random meetings each week at unpredictable times I'd have to get to. I have one child at school and one who already goes to a childminder while I volunteer for the organisation I'm looking to work for in a paid capacity. Most CMs seem to want regular working patterns, which isn't really surprising! Does anyone else have a similar predicament and what's the best solution? Thanks.

How much notice would you get of when the meetings were? A week before? Day before? 5 mins before?

I think it will be very difficult to find someone willing to work very unpredictable hours. You may find you have to pay for childcare you don't always need so you have last minute cover.

I think a nanny/au pair would probably be your best bet. Maybe a nanny share or nanny with own child to keep costs down.

Do you have any friends with a nanny? If you're very lucky you might find someone who is happy for their nanny (and the nanny is happy) to have your kids with short notice. I do this for a parent who is an actor and needs to attend occasional/ last minute auditions. I have a full-time job and will just help her out whenever she needs it (if I'm available I can't guarentee it). It works for me (bit of extra money) and the family I work for are very flexible. She'll usually buy them a bottle of wine or something to say thanks.
