I've just had my own baby and am still hoping to nanny with him but after no 2 will probably childmind.

Before you set up your business how did you know that there would be a demand for your services?

First of all find out how many childminders are already in your area. Then maybe ring a few and see what they think demand is like. Look out for advertisements locally, are there a lot of them? I'm in Wales and our FIS is very helpful, they can tell us how many childminders there are in my area.

Ultimately you won't know for absolute certain that there's a demand but you should get a good idea.

I agree with asking your local FIS. Also ask other CMs at toddler groups you attend. Remember you are limited in numbers and if you already have 2 under 5, you will only be allowed another 1 under 5 (+ older children).

yes, the under 5s is where the Big Money is, so you might be scunnered £-wise only having registration to care for 1 under 5

I didn't think there would be much demand. The FIS actively discaouraged me from registering as they said that lots of childminders had high vacancy rates. The childminder who used to look after ds was also struggling to find new work. I really wanted to childmind so I just took a leap of faith and registered anyway. The first few months were quiet but I did start getting enquiries and my places filled up. Now I am constantly turning away enquiries. Other childminders around me are still struggling so I think it depends a lot on how proactive you are about getting yourself known. Smile

I am in SW London - nappy valley... there are loads of nurseries and childminders. I was concerned as there are literally hundreds of CMs alone in our borough. I was concerned re the demand at the start.... 5 years later I have always been full, have 2-5 inquiries per week.

But as my Early Years Advisor told me... there may be hundreds of service providers... it certainly doesn't mean there are hundreds of EXCELLENT service providers. Offer an excellent service, be proactive and passionate, and you will succeed. Reputation and word of mouth is vital.

Is there something you can offer than other CMs maybe don't? Do you play the piano for eg.? I focus on the under 3s and do not do school runs.. which means parents with under 3s want me. School runs are disruptive with lunch and sleep. Think of something you can offer that is different to other service providers.. and give nothing less than excellence... and you'll be fine :)
