Hi
I don't have a job yet, and we don't live in London yet. I'm trying to think ahead to start planning for a potential move to London in the summer.
Can anybody give me a rough idea of what sort of hours a live-out nanny or a childminder would look after a child for. Eg earliest starts, latest finish etc. ?
And how much does childcare cost in london? (broadly)
It would be for a 15 month old.

Thanks

I pay £49 a day, can be 7 till 7, at a nursery I think childminders are generally slightly cheaper though I do know I someone paying a bit more. I expect they'll do 7 till 7 too? Possibly 7 till 6?

Every childminder chooses her own hours some do early starts some don't, some don't do late you just need to ring a few. Childcare.co.uk may have some hours on too.

A nanny could do 7am-7pm. Cost will vary.

Example Spreadsheet - roughly £22,000 upwards. Typically, if say the nanny is paid equivalent of £10 gross per hour, then around £36,000. It will depend on various factors, especially what salary you can negotiate with the individual nanny and what their likely weekly expenses (activities for the child) will be.

Age of child and number of children in the family in my view make little, if no difference. So a nanny is more viable the more children you have.

It depends where in london you are. I'm NW and nanny costs are generally 9-10 pounds an hour (plus tax and NI), although you can get away with less than that if you're hiring a full time nanny. You'll struggle to get anyone earier than 6.30am, unless you get a live in, but many work til 8pm.
There's more nany shares available in london that brings the cost down to 6-7 pounds before tax, but you don't always get some of the benefits of a nanny ie children may not be in your home at pick up time.

Nurseries open longer hours than outside london usually 7.30-6.30pm.

Hypothetically, you could advertise for a nanny to work any of the hours you needed, you might not find someone to work them though.

I am SW London - £6.50 per hour. (CM)

I have paid £9 per hour for after school childcare in cenrtal London.
I usually advertise on Gum tree. State very clearly exactly what you want and don't want, you will still get time wasters though. Having said that I have never failed to get lovely CM's through Gumtree.
