Hi. Ive just been looking at First Aid courses as mine runs out soon, and there are so many! Is there a certain title the course needs to be accepted by Ofsted ?
Thanks in advance!

It has to be paediatric first aid. I struggled in my county to get a course and we are no longer funded either. Ended up paying £115 for a st johns ambulance course!!Angry

Contact your local authority Early Years - they will be able to tell you if funding is available in your area and about the criteria for getting that funding.

Childminders (on Early Years and Childcare Register) have to do a 12-hour paediatric course. Nannies don't have to do a 12 hour course, though it is desirable. Nannies have to do a course that meets the specification as detailed in the Guide to Registration.

Shop around for providers, plus also look at training locations as costs do vary.

That's terrible Bonerz, £115!! I think OFSTED should pay this as it is they who want us to do the course every 3 years.

I did mine in November and December last year but if I had to pay that sort of money I would not bother renewing I am afraid, I have one child on my books, there is no work where I live as there are jobs going, not being created.

Hope you get money back.

Enhance services - national courses. Last time I looked £60 - did mine with them in October

redglow · 03/01/2012 19:52

It annoyed me last year whenI had to pay my first aid as a nanny and childminers on the same course did not so I think it is right that childminers are the same as nannies.

Bonkerz · 04/01/2012 18:39

No funding or way to get my money back and I'm not even registered yet! Ofsted would not complete my registration UnTIL I had completed first aid. So I'm not earning and so far it's cost me nearly £400 just to set up (equipment, insurance, first aid, fees, drs note etc)

MrAnchovy · 04/01/2012 19:22

Hope you haven't paid for insurance yet, you don't need it until the day you care for your first mindee.

Bonkerz · 04/01/2012 19:34

Had a visit from ousted just before Christmas to check my safeguarding folder and give brief check (also wanted to check some details for son who is 11 and autistic) and was told bEFORE I could get my reg visit I would need my first aid certificate (not jut completed course but have paperwork.... This took 4 weeks to arrive after I did the course) and I would need insurance and car insurance sorted before I get my clearence and certificate!

MrAnchovy · 04/01/2012 20:21

You do need the first aid, you don't need the insurance (you sign a declaration stating that you will have it effective when you start minding). Car insurance is nothing to do with Ofsted registration.

MrAnchovy · 04/01/2012 20:22

Sorry should have said car insurance is nothing to do with Ofsted registration, but of course you must have it in place the day you first drive a minded child.

my2princesses · 04/01/2012 22:01

I also had to pay £115 for St John's course in September last year and later found out from another childminder that they can get courses for £40-£45!!! Can you speak to your local childminding network to see if they know how you can get it cheaper.

You do have to have the cert before registration and mine came through 2 days before my pre reg visit!

If it makes you feel any better all my registration costs were self funded and so far i think my total is about £700 out of pocket :-( It's going to take me a long time to recoup my money but my daughters are so happy that mummy is home all day with them even if they do have to share me with 2 other children after school :-) It makes up for it x
