Was thinking about employing term time only ... would this be an attractive or realistic option? - anyone else done it ? how does it work?

It would probably appeal to a nanny with school age children. Live in might be tricky, if you want them to vacate during the holidays. I would think you would have to pay a retainer of some kind. I once worked for a teacher, who delayed renewing my contract, and the day before th easter holidays told me i was on a fornights holiday too!! Without pay!!! Didnt go back...!
If you want full time live in, ie a nanny who doesnt have children, it would only be fair to pay in full during holidays?
A childminder may work better for you?

A nanny friend of our nanny works for two families on a share basis.

Family one: mon-fri 8-4.30 Term time only for 8mth old(mum is a teacher)
Family two: After school mon-fri 3-6 and mon-fri 8.30-6 holidays for 5 and 7yr old.
That way its like having a full time job for her.

Would somthing like this work for you?

I've worked a term-time only position and quite enjoyed all the holidays - as I'm not a teacher I didn't have all the marking and the prep to do so time off was my own Smile

You need to pay holiday pay - the .gov site says term-time holiday pay is under review (has said that for months now!) but if I remember rightly it worked out at just under 5 weeks pay for a 39 week a year position. When you advertise I recommend annualising the salary to show the nanny what monthly pay she will get and 12 weeks off work each year. You can then divide it into 12 equal monthly payments so that she receives a regular income each month. This does lead to some complicated calculations if the nanny leaves part way through the year and depending on when she started she could end up owing you money or vice versa - just make sure it's covered in the contract.
