Do I pay cm when they have hols? And when ds is sick?

Sorry I'm new to having a cm! Ds got sent home today as he was sick, she told me t keep him off Tom as well (which is his last day). I've already paid her, should I ask for some back or is that just how it's done?

Also she has 4 weeks off a year, do I pay her for those?

Sorry to sound think I'm just wondering what's what.

It depends on your contract. Every childminder will have their own terms of business.

I feel that it would be common to pay when your child is sick.

For the childminders holidays - some will charge others will not. The same goes for when you go on holiday.

Please read the contract it should answer these questions. If you can not see where it mentions these things, then ask your childminder.

I'm yet to get a contract, she's sorting one out for after Xmas hols, just wondering what the 'norm' was

If you have a written contract, that ought to set out what is payable in the circumstances you describe.

Most CMs use written contracts, I must admit I don't any more though I used to. I do always charge for days when mindees don't attend due to illness, though I don't charge if I have to close due to my own illness or one of my dcs being ill.

Holidays will differ from one CM to another, but I tend to thing charging 100% for four weeks' holiday would be a bit excessive. I don't charge at all when I'm away, though some CMs I know charge a retainer, and also charge for bank holidays when they don't work. Hope this helps.

I think paying because your child is off sick is very much the norm. Different CMs will have different terms about whether you pay them while they're on holiday or not just like nurseries do. Our original one didn't charge us if we were on holiday and certainly didn't when she had planned leave, the other one did charge us but was cheaper overall.

I charge if the child is sick (as I have booked those hours/days out to that child and cannot fill it), but I don't charge for my hols. I take 5 weeks per annum but have my contracts set out with these deducted as I average out term-time and holidays so the money coming in doesn't change.

I pay full if ds is sick, nothing if cm is sick.

Also half pay during my holidays and her holidays, up to 5 weeks a year.

pinkyp · 15/12/2011 21:45

Right, I've paid her for 2 weeks hol so far,

What does your contract say?

Groovee · 19/12/2011 10:27

I pay when the children are off sick but not when the childminder is sick and I don't pay anything for holidays

I cant understand why you and the cm havnt sorted all this out weeks ago, I would never take on a newbie mindee without an agreed, signed written contract by both parties.

how on earth can you both have a working relationship when you dont seem to have hammered out the most basic of details as sickness and holiday pay.

is she insured without a contract, i always assumed I wouldnt be??

in the new year you need to get this sorted as soon as possible.
