I have just filled my tax return for 2010/2011. There is something I don't understand. I gave more than 500 pounds in account in July 2011 but it doesn't seem to have been taken into account/consideration. Can someone explain ?

I've just done my tax return (after reading your post and thinking 'eeek I never finished my tax return!) and on the last page it said:

'Payment due by 31 January 2012 = £xxx
This amount does not take into account any 2010-11 payments on account you may have already made or tax due for earlier years.'

So I'd guess they later deduct the payments you made on account? Its only a guess though, so unless MrAnchovy comes along to reassure you then maybe call HMRC's helpline?

MrAnchovy · 12/12/2011 17:31

You probably paid the same amount on account in January 2011. These don't appear on the tax return, but they should show in your account, together with the amount of tax due according to your return. Log in and it should show this in the 'at a glance' section. If there is a balance due back to you you can claim this straight away, if you have some left to pay this will be due by 31 January 2012, together with any payment on account for 2011/12.

MrAnchovy · 12/12/2011 17:31

I was already typing that out leeloo1! Grin

:) lol, I should have known you were on the case! :)

While you're here, can I hijack the thread for a second... when I was finishing my tax return I checked the box which was 'if you owe less than £2000 tax, do you want us to reclaim in through your 2012-13 PAYE code'.

So should I now pay HMRC the £700 I owe them or is this as it sounds and they'll add it on to next year's tax bill instead?

Summerfruit · 12/12/2011 17:49

Hi Mr anchovy !! So I went on my account as you said, it says that the subtotal is 1100 but I paid 2200 in total, 1700 in january 2011 and 500 in July, I'm completely lost !

Or 1100 was the total tax, the 600 hundred pounds I gave on the top of that in january was an account and what I gave in July another account...all the money I gave was not an account towards 2010/2011 taxes then..so confusing.

Leeloo that's an interesting one (I'm always interested in what you have to say, although that has a lot to do with Milla Jovovich Grin

They can only collect tax through your tax code if you are an employee, so if all your income was from childminding you shouldn't have been offered this option. Check what it says in the 'at a glance' summary and in the Tax Year Overview (click the 'Tax Due' link and it should give you a date).

MrAnchovy · 12/12/2011 18:18

So Summerfruit in January 2011 you paid £1,100 which was the figure on your 2009/10 return, plus £600 on account for 2010/11? And in July 2011 you paid an additional £500 on account for 2010/11 (strange, it's usually the same amount)?

That means you have paid £1,100 on account for 2010/11, so the amount you have left to pay for 2010/11 is whatever it came to on your tax return less £1,100. You may also have to make a payment on account for 2011/12. All of this should appear online under View Account, although you do have to wait for your tax return to be accepted before it will show correctly.

leeloo1 · 12/12/2011 18:47

Grin Would you believe I look just like Milla Jovovich too? (well almost exactly...I did have hair the same colour when I picked the username)

Good point about the PAYE code - it does seem unlikely they could reclaim it if I'm not PAYEing.

My 'at a glance' summary says I have 'nothing to pay'
Under 'tax return options' it says Submitted today, but ... 'Not Yet Received'
If I 'View Calculation' it says 'Payment due by 31 January 2012 - £700ish'
so perhaps the tax payment due just hasn't registered yet?

I tried to call HMRC but was on hold for 28 minutes then gave up. Grrr! Maybe I should just try and pay it to be on the safe side?!

MrAnchovy · 12/12/2011 19:56

You could just pay it now - if it says 'nothing to pay' then you don't owe them anything else and they don't owe you anything either (if they do it says 'You have overpaid. £xxx.xx is available for repayment.')

Or you could wait until the return has been accepted and it shows in your statement.

Or until 26th January (giving it time to clear for the 31st).

Leaving it til the 26th sounds like a remarkably good plan! Think I'll go with that one.

Thanks MrA. :)
