Long morning sleep and starting at childminder who won't be at home...

Hello

I know this must come up so much but if you could just re-assure me that would be great! My LO is 13 months and currently has a 3 hr sleep in the morning from 9.30ish to 12ish as she wakes at 5-6am.

At the childminders this won't be likely to happen as she is out at toddler groups (which I do like and want).

Will my LO adapt or will it really mess with her routine and create a problem?

I am not sure what to do and love this lady! LO is used to her naps in cot so think she might struggle to get her to sleep for any length of time in the pram.

Sorry and thanks again to anyone who can put my mind at ease.

Your DD will adapt, they're nosy little devils & all the new experiences will keep her awake until she needs to sleep then she'll go off anywhere!

I'm sure your CM has met this before, have a chat with her so she know what DD is like when tired (non-verbal cues like..rubs ears, grizzles, sucks fingers?) & provide her favourite get to sleep snuggly as that will smell of home.

She'll soon get into a new routine!

I often have babies who nap in the mornings. I make sure they have the extra comfy seat in the pushchair and are kept suitably warm/cool according to season so they can nap whilst we are out and about. They will usually have a shorter nap than at home which means they often enjoy a post lunchtime snooze in a travel cot after lunch. Over time they often drop the morning nap in favour of a longer post lunch sleep as they want to enjoy what we are doing when out and about Grin

Does not usually affect home routine but talk to your childminder if it does, we aim to work with our families Smile

Does she sleep in the afternoon at all? I would try keeping her morning nap to just 30 minutes, and then try putting her down again after lunch about 1pm. She might then drop the morning nap entirely.

You may find that if she's having a shorter sleep in the morning and a nap post lunch she may start laying in a bit longer in the morning for you Smile fingers crossed!

Is she going to be with the childminder every day? Do you like her to have this long morning sleep. If she's only going to be with the childminder a couple of days a week and you want her to continue with the long am sleep, why don't you consider getting a nanny for a few months until she drops the sleep - then she could go to the childminder when she's a bit older.
Its similar when they go up to the non baby room at nursery, usually at 13/15 months - they suddenly only get to go to sleep after lunch - 12ish and its quite difficult until they adapt.
But they do adapt - it depends if you want your LO to have a different routine.

dont worry, you want her routine to change i expect as waking you up at 5am is a bit of a shit isnt it?

going to the cms will enable her to establish a more 'normal' routine.

all are different of course but for her age I would factor in a morning nap of say an hour and an afternoon of say 40 mins, try to not let mindees sleep after 3pm as mucks up nights sleep(dont tell Ofsted).

she will be fine dont worry, if kids are that tired they sleep, anywhere and in any environment.

Wow, 3 hours is a long morning nap, even if she wakes at 5-6am.

Would agree with RitaMorgan and concentrate on around 1pm for a couple of hours nap.

At 13 months she should be able to get through the morning with maybe an hour if your childminder is out and about. Then having another proper sleep from around 1pm while the childminder is indoors and before having to do a school run maybe

It sounds like you are just a bit worried about daughter coming out of her routine, but I'm sure she will be able to have a nap in the morning, maybe just before childminder goes out to toddler group, which I do with mine if they need it.

She is a bit hit and miss with an afternoon nap. Some days she will and others she won't. Interesting what you say about not napping after 3pm thebody as my DD has slept through the night mostly when she has had an afternoon sleep around the 4pm mark. I have always been guided by her and hate waking her up half way through a sleep as I feel she needs it if she is sleeping for that long.

Thanks so much for all your advice. I have been by friends with toddlers that most eventually do have an afternoon nap. Will see what she is like after a few weeks there.
