AIBU asking my new employer this?

Hi,

I got a job offer as a live in nanny to start at the end of January. The family is just moving house and hasn't bought any furniture yet. My room won't be very big (will be 10 x 8.3 ft). Anyway... the mother thinks it's better to have a single bed so that I can have more space in my room. The thing is I really love having a double bed. So I was wondering if I should ask if they could buy me a bed from IKEA which is lovely as you can make it a single during the day and over the night it becomes a double.I will also offer to pay for it myself. Sorry that sounds like i am a brat but its a permanent position and I do not want to sleep in a single bed for a long time.

Of course you can ask Smile

I'd accommodate that request.

Ask and maybe offer to pay the difference.

Make it clear it isn't so you can shag boys at workWink.

TheOriginalFAB :-)

Don't worry. My bf lives in NYC until September.

No harm in asking :) Most people would see it as a reasonable compromise!

OrwellianNightmare · 04/12/2011 19:28

Utterly reasonable, and they should pay, or pay half at least: I would go so far to say I'd feel a little embarrassed asking an adult to sleep in a single bed full time.

Hi,

thanks for your many replies. I have emailed them last night, still no reply. I hope I wasn't being too weird.

this is not the first time i came accross this - is a single bed really not considered good enough/big enough for one person? i agree having a double bed for oneself is nice but single bed is perfectly fine??
btw i once ended up in a job that had a very small bed and in found myself sticking out of it and couldnt find a comfortable way of sleeping in it. i didnt last very long anyway...

MogandMe · 05/12/2011 22:07

I have worked as a live in with a single and with a double and love having a double bed to myself. Would probably not turn down a jjob if it was a single but would prefer a double Grin

Fishpond · 06/12/2011 00:51

Presumably they have to buy you a single bed anyway so think they should pay for the double. If the only reason they suggested the single is so you could have more room, then surely it's no problem to give you a double Smile

I, like you, prefer a double. Although I can sleep in a single.
