I am a level three teaching assistant and can not find any work so want to become a nanny. I have looked on the ofsted web site for regulations and just got confused. I have first aid for children from red cross I have food safety level 2 and lots of other qualifications. So I guess I am asking would I be able to register? any one had this experience before?

You don't have to register with Ofsted to be a nanny, but if you want to register so your employer can cliam tax credits or whatnot then you would need to register on the voluntary part of the childcare register as a "home childcarer". This form might be helpful.

What specific childcare qualifications do you have?

You may need to do a short/home study course to meet the common core requirements.

You don't have to have any qualifications my friend just registered and she had none but she is a mum of four so has experience. she researched the core skills as ofsted did ask.

Another useful document is Factsheet: Requirements for Childcare Register, childminders and Home Childcarers (Ref: 080161 - April 2010)

If you wish to become Ofsted registered (and as others have already said, you do not have to do so to be a nanny) then your stumbling block is likely to be CR4.2
Childminders and home childcarers must have successfully completed a:
~ qualification at a minimum of level 2 in an area of work relevant to childcare,
or
~ training in the core skills as set out in the document ?common core of skills and knowledge for the children?s workforce?.

The document referred to is: Common core of skills and knowledge for the children's workforce (pdf) (Ref: DfES 1189 2005)
