How do I find out about local childminders?

My DD is currently at a nursery and over the last few months I have slowly become less and less happy with the level of care she receives. There are too many children in the class for the number of nursery staff and also little things like her daily form being filled in incorrectly with another childs details.
I would absolutely love not to work and to be a SAHM mum but at present we cannot afford it, plus I am starting a new job on Monday.
Anyway, I think a child minder could be an option but don't really know where to start.

check your local council website, or give them a ring

they should have a list of all registered cm's in the area

Hi there.

You can phone the Children's Information Service for a list or visit the childcare link website where most are listed online, you just put your postcode in!

I did what np suggests. I went on the council website and found the Early Year Service - think it might have changed name to Children's Information Service and e-mailed them. They sent me out a list of local CMs with contact details (addresses and numbers). It supposedly included their availability (times and places) but was totally wrong. Armed with my list I talked to my friend who is a SAHM and really involved in the community - runs M&Ts, volunteers in school nursery etc and knows all the CMs. I was looking for before/after school & hols though because DS was starting school.
