I have just interviewed a nanny for one day a week who seemed really nice.however she asked if she could bring her own washing in to do. I was a bit taken aback but she said most nannies do. Is this right?

Completely agree with BoffinMum

I think that this is such an unusual and presumptious request that I would be very concerned that she might be odd or have unusual or inflated expectations in other respects - and that you would find this out after she has been with you a couple of months or so. I think that most people try to put their best foot forward in an interview so to bring this up at this stage is doubly odd.

I once had a full time nanny job, which was technically live in, but I was provided with a bedsit down the road. As I didn't have a washing machine, and was paid a low wage the family told me to use their washing machine. (I used the local launderette to dry things on the way home)

But for a once day a week job, it does sound odd.

PickleMyster · 17/11/2011 23:00

No most nannies don't do that.

I used to leave my swimming gear in work (weekly parent/carer and baby swim lesson) and have it washed there each week but would never even dream of bringing my day to day washing to work. Very odd!!

My boss did offer to when my washing machine packed up, she also let me store food in her freezer (for a couple of days) when I moved house.

Generally on the whole this nanny is talking bo!!ocks. :)

ohnoshedittant · 17/11/2011 23:06

That's very odd! In a way though I think it's good that she asked at the interview and didn't wait until she started, or worse do it without asking.

What did you say when she asked? How did she take it?

It's a bit like when nannies come for interview or apply for jobs, and start saying "I want £500 a week net, this is what I am prepared to work for, I am worth it, and by the way, I don't work on Fridays so I will do a four day week for that, can't you change your job around or get another job to fit in with me?" before you've so much as sat down.

I show them the door as well.

marshmallowsontopplease · 18/11/2011 20:49

I guess at least she is being honest from the outset.

Just trying to look on the bright side.

eastnorth · 18/11/2011 23:46

Thanks so much for all your replies I saw another nanny tonight and she was lovely and did not mention washing. She even said she would so some cooking when my child was asleep or clean some toys. Starting to see the advantage of a nanny.

Lol @ 'most nannies'. Some maybe, in special situations i.e. she lives temporary with no w/m and works 80hrs pw.

If she does the same on the other days she works for other families thats a lot ironing for one person Wink.
I think it might not be her washing/ironing maybe she takes ironing for extra cash and she wants to kill 2 birds. Cheeky.

redglow · 19/11/2011 13:08

Cannot believe she would bring this up at an interview.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 19/11/2011 22:34

The first nanny is barking and should be avoided at all costs.

Is that clear enough Grin

It's not so much the fact that she wants to do her washing at yours (which is odd enough anyway) but that she basically told you at the interview that this is what she would be doing and that it's what all nannies do - it bloody well isn't!

If a nanny is live in then of course they do their washing there.
If a nanny is live 'in' but in separate accommodation without a WM then of course she should do it there
If a nanny is live out - then she 'lives out' and if she lives somewhere without a machine and asks you nicely if you'd mind her doing it there I think it would be churlish to say 'no you can't'

Barking - she is, barking. If you employ her I'll put money on you regretting it within the month!

Nanny2 sound much better. Do you have others to see?

babysittersupremo · 20/11/2011 19:03

I've been a fulltime nanny and would never dream of doing this. They were oaying me and I then use their washing machine? No way, totally unprofessional of her to ask unless hers has broken for a favour. Especially if she's only there one day a week! I would be thinking that if she risks asking that at interview, how esle will she be trying to take advantages once shes started!

eurycantha · 20/11/2011 19:10

I am having my kitchen rebuilt at home and am going to ring my boss to ask if they d mind me putting a load on tomorrow but I would not generally do any of my washing at work at all and I don`t know any nannies who do.I had felt I had a bit of a nerve asking but major kitchen problems mean no machine this week so a little desperate.

eastnorth · 20/11/2011 19:30

Thanks for your replies i interviewd three nannies who were all nice, but one said about the washing number two was great and number 3 said she was trying for a baby so decided not to go with her.

Fingers crossed it will all go well.

Will say one thing nannies are very honest at interviews.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 21/11/2011 01:01

LOL - they certainly can be Grin

So are you offering the job to number 2? When will she start?

eastnorth · 21/11/2011 21:22

Yes its going to number 2 and she is starting after xmas. I told number one the reason why I did not give her the job and she said She did not want to work for me anyway and she meant she would bring her washing in now and then not every week.

echt · 22/11/2011 08:05

Well, she would say that, wouldn't she?:o

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 22/11/2011 10:21

LOL yeah sure, that's why she brought it up at interview Grin

I hope it goes well with N2 :)
