Reading books/homework- how does this work between nanny/parents supervising?

Dd just started getting reading books and there usual diary to be filled in at home with comments on what they have done.

Nanny has started filling this in (without asking us ). Now I don't particularly mind this but in practice how do other nannies/parents arrange it where there is a mix of sometimes nanny helping read and sometimes the parents doing it?

It's whoever listens / helps them do the work who writes it; so babysitters, grandparents, childcares, relatives, parents. How can a parent write how their child had a certain issue on Monday while reading the book if they don't get to hear the child read until the weekend?

When DC starts school next year I imagine it will be 50/50 with my boss as I work 7.30-5.30 so will probably do the majority of reading practice after school but MB may also do some as part of the bedtime routine.

:)

I agree with mog.

I do the homework mon-thurs, parents on fri/weekend.

The homework diary is there for both tho so obviously the parent can write little notes for the teacher, even if the nanny has signed the homework off.

Thanks for tips- that seems practical for whoever is around to do it

Any practical tips on how to get children to do their reading/homework?

In the past I've had children who are quite happy to do it. What about children who are not happy to do it... is routine the way to get it done?

nannynick - the only things I have ever found to work are a) routine and b) doing it in the morning when they are reasonably fresh and you can give them more immediate bribes.

agree its whoever does the homework - and sadly i have found that many parents just cant be arsed/dont bother with reading (tho obv not all) at the end of the day at 6/7pm the child is tired and doesnt concentrate properly-sure your nanny is only trying to do her job

nick - homework as soon as home from school - have a small drink/snack and then do it

no tv/playing etc till its done

harsh but works

It depends what the homework is as to when I do it. If it requires writing etc then it's done once home and snacked but as soon as a child starts school if introduce a quick (5min tops) brain gym in the evening to put homework in the map. Learning is done on the way to and from school, chanting, rapidfire questions, situational maths problems.

I also take the view that whoever is there does it but rarely hurts a child to read twice.
