I want to try help a friend of mine with her CM paperwork: she's got a bit stuck on it and we are going to try and blitz it this weekend. She needs to sort out her risk assessments, policies and lesson plans (???she's only wanting to look after toddlers- this seems really mad to me)

I don't really know much about it so Google isn't helping me much (I don't know what to search for, IYSWIM).

Does anyone know if there are helpful websites offering guidance or sample materials to get prospective CMs started. I can't imagine there are that many different ways to say 'I intend to feed your child regularly and comfort them if they are upset'....

I tried directgov and Ofsted websites when I was looking for a CM and they were both useless as sources of helpful information, but maybe there is some stuff in there that is well-hidden???

Thanks in advance!

Heya,

If you go onto the ncma website there are sample policies there. Do not use the bromley fis site they are really out of date

Not sure what she needs lesson plans for? Does she mean like a routine?

I am a new cm so its all pretty fresh in my mind, feel free to pm me if you need any help.

I wouldn't advise the bromley site as it is really out of date.

A lot of ofsted inspectors have been marking down as the policies are outdated with some wrong and out of date information on them.

If you do use it ensure that you check everything is in line and not out of date

You shouldn't use them straight from there anyway, I just use them for the basics and ideas then add my own bits or update as needed.

Policies and procedures are different for each childminder-we all work in different ways,so what may suit one setting will not suit another. Some policies should contain certain things for example the name of your local safeguarding board in your safeguarding children policy.Remember-childminders dont have to have policies although it is seen as good practice by Ofsted. The EYFS pack tells you which ones Ofsted do look for.
Policies are there so that you can set out your guidelines and expectations to parents, and also shows what the parents can expect from you so write exactly what you intend to do in certain situations for example how you will deal with inappropriate behaviour.
a good website is www.childmindingforum.co.uk
