I'm looking for a cleaner for my father in law's house. he lives by himself in a big old house and can't manage it (but also doesn't want to move).
It needs a good one off clean, which is one thing - but then, as maintenance, he'd like a housekeeper who comes maybe twice a week, who is 1) a friendly familiar face and someone to chat to for a bit of company 2) a cleaner and 3) someone who will cook him/freeze him the occasional meal. I kind of feel I need someone like Mrs Doubtfire or Mary Poppins but have literally no idea where to start. Cleaning company is not the right route, nanny is not the right route either... where do I find someone??!!
By the way, he lives in London Colney, Hertfordshire (just off Jc 22 of M25) - if anyone knows anyone local that could fit the bill!
Thank u!!

what a lovely DIL you are. If I lived nearer I would do it!!! I think personal recommendation is the way to go,as its a job that requires a honest & trustworthy person. I would ask your friends on Fb if they know of anyone. good luck...

i would ask on FB except it's a little sensitive - as he's such an independant man and wouldn't want everyone to know he's in this situation - and lots of people that know him are friends with me.
I could ask close friends if they knew of anyone - I just think it'll take me ages to try and find someone that way.

However - I do appreciate that recommendation is DEFINITELY the way to go!

Thanks for your message...
Josie

How about contacting this charity - they are an amalgamation of Age Concern / Help the Aged.

Sorry posted too soon - they must have come across this situation before.

What about advertising in the Lady magazine

GruffaloReader · 09/11/2011 15:19

great - will check out that website. Didn't even think of something like help the aged. we don't want it for free though (ie, charity) - we're willing to pay... but I guess they could at least point us in the right direction. Thank you!!!!!!!!

And - "the lady" magazine.... what is that?? Literally never heard of it... sounds a bit "posh" Blush

We found a lovely lady for my grandma through Gumtree. She cleans, helps her with cooking, picks up shopping, takes her to hospital appointments, basically she assists her with anything that she needs help with
