Is this a crb check?

Have asked nanny for CRB check evidence. I have been given page 1 of a 2 part document entitled enhanced disclosure from July 2010 i.e. 16 months ago. Is this adequate for the agency to say that they have crb checked her? Is this a crb check? Also does anyone know what would have been on page 2 and I have not been sent this.

Many thanks.

honestly not being patronising, but have you looked on the other side? My CRB says page 1 of 2 on one side, and page 2 of 2 on the other.
Enhanced disclosure is a CRB and 16 months ago is relatively recent as they do not ever need updating.

goingbacktowork · 07/11/2011 10:30

You are not being patronising - I have seen a copy of it so it is only a one sided copy! Smile

The back is the important bit as it lists cautions. It may not have anything on it, thus they didn't copy it but I feel they should have done so anyway to prove that there is nothing of interest on page 2.

jendot · 07/11/2011 12:28

My page 2 is blank........ (but I have no convictions etc so my crb is short)

but if it is a 2 page document you should be presented with both pages....

16mnths is not long ago for a crb. It will only be renewed if she takes on a new job (like childminding or working in a school) where the rules require a new one to be done by that organisation. As a nanny you just keep using the same one.

jendot · 07/11/2011 12:29

ps ..as a second thought I would not accept a COPY of such an important document I would insist on seeing the original!! Copies can be doctored...

mranchovy · 08/11/2011 20:00

16 months ago is relatively recent as they do not ever need updating.

Absolutely and dangerously wrong I am afraid. A CRB check is only valid on the day it is done, so if you are recruiting her through an agency you should ask them to get an updated one - that is what you pay them a fee for (in fact it is very unprofessional of them not to do this automatically, they would almost certainly lose a negligence claim if the nanny turned out to have a record and you sufferred a loss as a result: is this a reputable agency?)

moogster you may be confusing this with the fact that Ofsted do not require CRB checks to be updated; this is because when you are registered with Ofsted they are notified of any new arrests/cautions etc. directly by the police.

ScarfOfSexualPreference · 08/11/2011 20:24

I think a copy is ok before meeting the nanny- like just as part of the pre-interview paperwork sent out by lyself or an agency. They should have sent both sides though. I always take my CRB, qualifications, first aid, driving licence to actual interviews so you'd see it then, how could you see the original before meeting the nanny? No way I would send it anywhere!

The time thing is up to you- there is no law saying you have to get one every year, every new job etc, as a nanny. Usually when interviewing, parents and agencies expect to see one done within the last 12 months and because I try to take jobs for longer than that I get a new one each tiem I change jobs. But they do cost so I only do it if necesary. CRB checks have to be done through an agency- I can't just send off for one, an agency has to do it on my behalf- but it may not have been done through the agency you are using. Typically when registering with an agency I have to meet them in person, show all of my documents which they then copy in order to show parents. So the agency will have seen the original and been happy to register the nanny, but may not have copied both sides or sent both sides.

But please remember that all the CRB does is check for convictions and criminal record- all it means is the nanny has never been convicted of anything. It doesn't mean they are perfect! I don't think much of them.

mranchovy · 08/11/2011 20:53

I don't think much of them.

Should have said I don't think much of them either but then we have mostly had foreign nannies. But if you are going to have one, you may as well have every page of an up-to-date one.

ScarfOfSexualPreference · 08/11/2011 22:00

I should add, I don't think much on them based on my own experience. I've worked abroad twice, 3 months in Belgium and over a year in France yet the CRB doesn't take that into account. I could have Been convicted of a murder abroad which wouldn't show up on a CRB! I haven't though Grin

magicOC · 08/11/2011 23:15

Just do you know, a genuine copy will have something written over the page like, copy or duplicate or something along those lines, been so long since I sent a copy I can't remember.

This does NOT show up on the actual CRB but, does appear if you photocopy. Good security measure I suppose as you can't fake that.

Nothing unusual in sending copies, but, she should bring the original with her.

fraktious · 09/11/2011 08:21

The CRB should as you to provide evidence of good conduct, either a blank casier judiciare or similar, or a letter from the embassy. They still aren't perfect but great holes because you lived abroad shouldn't be acceptable.

LIZS · 09/11/2011 08:27

Normally you woduls ee orignal so you can certify the copy. It is a double sided document although I have nothing of note on the reverse of mine. Theoretically they don't need renewing but in practice they are done at between 2-5 year intervals depending on the organisation/situation or if a new employer has a policy fo having their own rather than certifying an existing one.

Bossybritches22 · 09/11/2011 08:33

A CRB does not mean your employee is safe to work with children, it just means they have never been caught & convicted.

In nurseries/schools you have to have a fresh one every time you move jobs so it is relevant FOR THAT POST.

Should be the same for nannies frankly.

Always see the original.

goingbacktowork · 09/11/2011 21:15

I think I am going to start another thread on this to see what people generally think is acceptable. The new nanny's CRB is 18 months old. I am trying to gauge if this should be acceptable if the agency that the nanny is from says: "Before registering with us a nanny must have an up-to-date first aid certificate and have been checked through the criminal records bureau."

OP posts:
fraktious · 10/11/2011 05:40

IMO it isn't acceptable. Anything could have happened in those 16months do the agency are being very foolish unless they are currently processing another.

Bossybritches22 · 10/11/2011 08:09

Up to date does not = 18 months old

sunshinenanny · 12/11/2011 23:55

I would add that if your nanny is registered with Ofsted as a Homecarer (which is Ofsted speak for nanny) the date on the CRB is irrelevant because once checked through them the police update them if you are accused of or commit any crime. I always send a copy of my documents but take originals to the interview.

Nannies do not always get their jobs through agencies and are unable to get checked themselves. I think an Ofsted CRB is never out of date for the above reason.

Lomg before CRBs as we now know them came intro force you could go along to your local Police Station and ask them to run a check for the small sum of £10 I did this for my agency and employers peace of mind!

I think people over rely on CRBsHmm

sunshinenanny · 12/11/2011 23:58

Does that answer your point on nannies and police checks Bossybritches22

Bossybritches22 · 13/11/2011 00:42

Errrr not my question SN but thanks, it was the OP!

I worked with & did CRB checks for over 10 years, they're out of date the day they're printed in reality, the police wouldn't automatically update either unless a person was formally charged in which case they'd have their CRB verification withdrawn.

I totally agree about going to the Police station, far easier AND they usually had local knowledge! Grin

sunshinenanny · 13/11/2011 14:33

I meant you saying nannies should have a new CRB each job Bbitches I was just clarifying that our ofsted ones are automatically updated by the police and if our jobs aren't through an agency we can't apply for them ourselves sorry I wasn't clear.Smile

A bit different if nanny isn't registered I supposeHmm

sunshinenanny · 13/11/2011 14:40

Sorry, above should read also that if our CRB was withdrawn so to would our Ofsted registration be cancelled.
