To ask someone to do more than childmind??

Basically we need a childminder just a few hours a day. But is it ok to ask the person to also do light household chores. Or is it poss to hire a care assistant who will also childmind?

Need help with baby and chores will am at work but my husband who has a disability (mobility issues) will be in the house. He cannot undertake heavy lifting hence the need for help with childminding.

Confused at options and what to do really. Really don't want to place baby in full time care as husband wants to spent that time with baby.

Why not just draw up a list of what you want and without putting a title, ie. childminder, see if you get any interest. It sounds more to me like a 'mother's help' as I think it used to be called?

NickNacks · 04/11/2011 13:27

A childminder is self employed and works from their own home caring for children from several families. I don't think this is what you are looking for.

TheTenantOfWildfellHall · 04/11/2011 13:29

A childminder is quite different to what you are looking for. I think you want a nanny or an au pair.

I've used 2 childminders in the past. Both of them were great but I'm not sure what they'd have said if I'd asked them to pop round to mine and do a bit of housework too! Grin

Yes you're right. Am prob looking more so for a care assistant who will do a spot of babysitting?? Do these people exist out there ? Would they be CRB checked? How would I know?

Isn't there something called a "mothers help"? That fills this role?

valiumredhead · 04/11/2011 13:31

Yes, you need a mother's help.

itsnicetobeniceto · 04/11/2011 13:35

What are the going rates for this type of work? Could I pay for it using child tax credits?

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 04/11/2011 13:36

I have no idea, I would suggest ringing around a few agencies to get an idea of the price.

itsnicetobeniceto · 04/11/2011 13:37

Th reason why I ask can I use child tax credits is that my husband has a disability so I need help at home in order for me to return to work full time.
Thanks everyone for replies so far - you're all very good!!

sounds like a nanny job. £8hr round here. if your dh needs help then i wouldn't have thought a nanny would do that though - they tend to do jobs relating to the child they are looking after.

In your local shop windows also, maybe OP?

CMOTdibbler · 04/11/2011 13:51

Sounds like your husband needs a cleaner/housekeeper who will assist your husband when he needs it with the baby.

Why not put a card up in a local shop or do an ad, and find someone you like.

My cleaner babysits, does ironing, and even sews in nametapes for me, and I know she does light care for another client, so there are people out there who would like this sort of job

Theas18 · 04/11/2011 14:42

BUT remember this would be the sort of arrangement where you would be responsible for the tax etc for the employed person. My nanny wouldn't do anything not directly related to the baby , but I know some will

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/11/2011 14:56

def not a cm as others have said they work from THEIR home not yours

most nannies wouldnt want to do the things you require - some some will

you prob need a mothers help or a girl friday - would you consider an older teenager/student as if your dh is about, they wont have sole charge of child

longjane · 04/11/2011 19:13

have you tried care/nursing agencys their workers will be CRD checked

nannynick · 04/11/2011 20:59

Perhaps post on Parents with Disabilities to ask other people in a similar situation what financial help they are able to claim and what they are able to spend that money on.
