Would you tell me how much holiday you give your nanny?

Just a quick poll really - do you go for the statutory 5.6 wks including Bank Holidays or offer more?

I work full time and I have 5.6 weeks in my contract but my boss gets about 10 weeks throughout the year. I usually get most of my bosses leave as holiday but sometimes I have to work (but 98% of the time I'm off). However I am very lucky in that I don't usually have to use her leave as holiday and get to choose about 4 weeks of my own - usually charge stays with grandparents to cover these weeks.

As a nanny with 25 years of experience I ask for 5 weeks (3 weeks parents choice, 2 weeks mine) + bank holidays in my contract. So slightly higher than statutory. I usually find that the 3rd week choice for the parents is taken between Christmas and New Year so takes into account 2 of the bank holidays (I wouldn't say that they then owe me those 2 bank hols)

A lot of people with nannies tend to work in jobs or be in a high enough position in their job to have more than the statutory minimum (though I realise not all)

I have to say that I only ask for a week off at Christmas and then I generally go along with when the parents are off. At the beginning of the summer holidays they ask me when I want off and between us we agree on dates .As nbee says we often get much more than the agreed in our contracts.I have all half terms and bank holidays.I have four weeks in my contract,I usually end up with at least five weeks.

We gave our nanny (we now have au pair but do the same) 7 weeks holiday per year (plus bank holidays), but we got to choose all of them. We did specify which weeks they were at the beginning of the year so she could plan her holidays. This did include one whole summer month off so the nanny was ok with it. Not sure if it would be everyone's cup of tea but we were lucky to find a nanny that this was attractive to.

Thank you for all your replies.

I just wanted to know what would be considered reasonable. I put 5.6 weeks in the contract which she's almost used up and if all requested leave is taken, it would mean no days off for our nanny in the first three months of the year.

I'm quite happy for her to take extra at my discretion, but I don't really want to change the contract as I thought 5.6wks was reasonable for a fairly young nanny with a couple of years experience.

I'll have a chat with her Monday when she's next in.

Sorry, that doesn't sound clear. I meant that if she takes all the leave she wants, in addition to the time I'm taking off over Christmas, she won't have any leave left from Jan to March (we're running an April-March year).

Our nanny has statutory minimum in the contract, of which she chooses 50%, but will in all likelihood get over that at our discretion. It's not contracted though as it could fall that DH's deployments and my teaching terms oppose each other so we get limited holiday as a family or he could be away when I'm teaching and need her anyway so we get lots of family holiday.

X-posts.

That situation is pretty normal tbh. You're happy to give extra discretionary leave but she has none of her picks left so just check she's aware that get allowance has been exhausted until April.

nbee84 · 04/11/2011 11:53

That sounds normal - my leave runs May-April. I've had a week in July, a week in August, a week in October - a week to come at Christmas and my final week is beginning of April, so no holiday in Jan, Feb or March.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/11/2011 13:20

always have 5 weeks in contract - 2 weeks theirs, 2 weeks mine and a week between xmas and ny

last job normally had 11/12 weeks a year as parents went away alot in half terms - and yes i had the time off and paid

Nannyloobs · 04/11/2011 16:43

I get 5 + weeks, and bank holidays as well. But the parents choose them (although are flexible if I need to have a long weekend here or there). This year I have had at least 7 weeks of holiday, fully paid, but last year I only got the 5, which is fine! A week between christmas and new year, a week in feb, 3 weeks in the summer hols, and sometimes a week/or a long weekend in October some time. :D
