Live in nanny in the countryside?

DP are looking at our next house & we dont have children yet, but hopefully it will become our family home.

We currently live in London (where i am guessing hiring a nanny would be expensive but many nannies) but have recently thought about moving to the countryside (say 50 miles from London).

The countryside houses we have been looking at would allow live in (hopefully in a separate flat/house in the garden). Is it going to be difficult to recruit to a relatively remote location? (maybe in village, may be a few miles from village/train station)

It can be hard, or it can be easy, depends on who you get interested in the job. Also consider that local people may like the job, so could be live-out. I work about 8 miles from home, just outside the M25 in rural Surrey (or not so rural depending on your view). The village has a church, a school and a garden centre... no shops, so quite rural in my view.

The thing about being rural is having transport... how far to the nearest train station, nearest town? Would the nanny need to drive a car? Could they cycle? What about activities for the children... car driver needed?

Separate flat/house is possibly a taxable benefit. So you may want to avoid that... instead how about looking at houses which have enough rooms to enable the nanny to have a room with an en-suite bathroom, or which have enough bathrooms so the nanny can have their own?

I have worked in several very remote places.I think as long as you get a nanny who like the countryside and can drive you should find it possible to find a good nanny. In my first job looking after a very young baby I was not driving yet, I would walk a lot ,gradually meeting people and through word of mouth other nannies,I loved it surrounded by countryside and horses,I visited people and rode and visited the pub on occasional evenings.I hopped on a bus to go to town. I went home at the weekend. My next job was even more remote but a ten minute drive up to the main town so easy access to libraries and schools etc.My currant job is in a village and is the first place I`ve worked in that I could walk the children to the shops. Many of my friends around here do work in very remote places. But nowadays all of us do drive.I agree with Nick you need to sort out her transport and that she likes the countryside and country activities.

I only ever considered countryside based jobs and all my jobs had a seperate flat as accomodation. I'm sure you'll find someone very easily. I would look for an experienced driver though as driving down country lanes in the ice and snow can be fun!
