Nanny car insurance - extension from existing Nanny insurance?

I need to use my own car in a job I start late November. From what I understand I can get my car insurance extended to cover work or possibly get my nanny insurance (I'm with Nannyinsure) extended to cover car use.

Does anybody know how this works or which would be better to use?

No idea about NannyInsure. With Morton Michel, nanny insurance (public liability) is separate to Motor Insurance. MM provide Nanny motor insurance separately and it is worded on the policy as 'social, domestic & pleasure purposes and business use in connection with childcare activities.'

Some nannies will choose to have Class 1 Business use added to their existing motor insurance policy via their current broker/insurer. That may or may not be sufficient cover. It's a very unknown situation really as it isn't until you try to claim on insurance that you find out if it's sufficient cover or not.

Looking at the NannyInsure website, I can not see where they provide Motor Insurance - are you sure they provide that?
Maybe you are confused with regard to Contingent Motor Insurance.
"This provides cover when you are in a vehicle which is not the property of nor provided by you, not being driven by you, but where you could be held legally liable for an accident. It does not cover you whilst you are driving on duty in a car provided by your employer; you must be covered on your employer?s motor insurance for this purpose." (From the NannyInsure FAQ)

Contingent Motor Insurance (CMI) to me seems not to cover much at all. It does not cover your own car. It does not cover a car provided by your employer. It does not cover a car you drive. So what does it cover? I think it's being a passenger in someone else's car... which is probably actually covered by their own insurance - though if you did something in the car which resulted in the accident, then CMI may cover you for that.

As you are needing to use your own car for work, I feel that you need to have your current motor insurance modified to cover transporting children in your care for whom you are paid to transport (as you will be claiming mileage payments) but not Public Hire. So call your broker/insurer and ask them about what policy add ons they could do - such as Business Class 1 and anything else that may be more suitable. Also contact MM to see if they can give you a quote - so you have something to compare against.

Thank you. I never knew that about the business insurance, a bit worrying that.

It was the contingent that I noticed on my policy, I don't understand it which is partly why I asked here first before calling them.

I'll call MM and see what they say before calling my current car insurance company!

By the way, I hope everything is okay wrt your accident the other day. How is everybody?

Fortunately no one was injured. Got some good news today, repairs have started on my car but it will be 10 days or so before I'm likely to see it again.

It's good that it's repairable :)

I added business use to my policy for less than £10 and also always ensure I have legal cover through it too considering I am driving other people's children.

Ah, never even thought about legal cover! Thanks I think (!)

I have just realised that I have to buy a new car as well as both me and DP own cars that cannot have the passenger airbag removed or disabled. I suppose it's better to know now than in three weeks time but it's still a palava!
