Is this a 'bad' hallowe'en idea?

I have enough mini pumpkins I get get hold of for all the children in the setting

I thought to cut out some 'happy/nice' face bits out of black sugar paper & stick them (somehow) on to the Pumpkin & send them home with the children next week along with a pumpkin recipe

BTW does anyone have a pumpkin recipe?

Do all the families approve of Halloween - some might not. So maybe make them on offer to people, rather than giving to all.

Bluetac or something like that may stick paper to pumpkin... think you may need to experiment a bit. Suggest you experiment before you get lots of mini pumpkins.

Delia has some recipes.
BBC Food has quite a lot including pumpkin drop scones.

What recipes people would do and what children might eat will probably vary quite a bit from family to family.

Well I hoped Pumpkins would be the best of a hallowe'en/autumn/harvest fusion without too much ghosties & ghoulies emphasis (which is why the happy/nice faces iyswim)

Sounds like a great idea, much easier than carving them for small hands.

It's hard to get a balance isn't it?

Go for it. Sounds a great idea. Call it harvest for those who don't like halloween.

looneytune · 21/10/2011 21:32

i think it sounds like a lovely idea! :)

Fingers crossed no-one is offended

You can always emphasise the fusion by taking about the origins and why we use pumpkins etc. It does derive from a harvest/end of summer celebration after all.

Will do

pipe cleaners twisted onto the stalk make nice pumpkin hair.

Googly eyes stick fairly well with self adhesive or double sided sticky tape.

Funky foam or sugar paper ditto.
Magic markers draw well on pumpkins

Thanks Unis they were painted on in the end & sent home with recipes (with a very technically vague top sheet:

Pumpkin recipes

While we don?t ?celebrate? Hallowe?en in the way lots of people do, we thought it appropriate to think about the bountiful ?Harvest? in the Autumn and how many cultures celebrate this including American ?Thanksgiving?. There are also many festivals of light including ?Diwali?, ?Bonfire Night?, ?Hallowe?en? and even ?Channukah? so we made candles and firework pictures too. In addition there is the Chinese festival of the autumn moon, and moon phases signify the start and end of Ramadan at this time of year.

We hope you enjoy your pumpkins, they are to be eaten; we attached some recipes for you to try, (but if you don?t they can be composted when the children have finished with them).

sounds fine, I'd have been OK with that coming home with DS.

Thanks - I'm getting better at multiculturalism (I hope)
