Are they different for cm than nursery?
See a lot of posts claiming cm is one on one care v. Not the case in a nursery. Is this really the case?

For a nursery it will be 1:3.

While a CM will only have one U12month but may have other children over 12months at the same time.

Standard ratios for a childminder:

6 children under 8 years old of which.....
3 may be under school age of which....
1 may be under 1 year old

However a variation may be granted at times to allow 4 under school age and/or 2 under 1. But always a total of 6 aged under 8.

Obviously this changes when working with an assistant.

The ratios do work slightly differently, but I think that generally when people talk about a childminder being more 1:1 than a nursery, they mean that with a CM, it's one person for your DC to bond with/form an attachment with, whereas in a nursery, even if they have a keyworker (which is usual), there will be other adults around and although the KW is assigned to that child, the KW will have other children to attend to as well, so if the KW is busy, another nursery nurse will be attending to your DC. In a CM situation, the CM has to balance the needs of all the children, but there is nobody else to step in if she is busy so she is always the one dealing with your DC.

Under the age of 2 it's best if wherever possible, children form a secure attachment to the carers they have. In a nursery it's harder for them to form this attachment if they are constantly being cared for by different people. This is why a nursery with high staff turnover is not a good thing to see (as well as probably meaning the management are crap and/or the working environment very stressful)
