I'm sure this comes up more than once a year...how much for nanny of 6 months? outer London (does that make a difference?)

My nanny doesn't get a Christmas bonus. Neither do I. Neither does DH... nor does anyone I know come to think of it. But we do buy her a nice pressie for Christmas. I'm going to spend roughly as much as I spend on each of my children, so I hope she doesn't feel left out.

SilentBite · 15/12/2005 12:34

I give the nanny, the cleaner and the dogwalker a week's wages (net) each. Plus a small pressie.

uwilalalalalala · 15/12/2005 12:39

Silent Bite... Are you CountessDracula?

SilentBite · 15/12/2005 12:41

Oui

Bugsy2 · 15/12/2005 12:42

I've always given a nice pressie and a week's extra money. Sadly I don't get a week's extra pay but it does seem fairly standard in London to give nannies, aupairs, cleaners etc etc some extra cash at Christmas. I think it is cash in hand (or envelope!) as opposed to additional wages.

uwilalalalalala · 15/12/2005 12:43

Clever... nice Chrismas name.

SilentBite · 15/12/2005 12:46

LOL! Is the same one I had last year...

I rather like your too

hativity · 15/12/2005 16:26

hmmm week's wages feels like a lot - as she's only been with us for 6 months and as she is taking a long break over Christmas do you think half a weeks wages, or bit more, is ok?

Cor, hativity, can I come and work for you!!!! Last year I was given a £2 candle from Matalan from the parents of my mindee. And I'd spent a fortune doing the All My Own work to give them some keepsakes.

FL.

jellyjelly · 15/12/2005 18:26

I havent received anything for any occasions from any of my mindees when i have done lots for them but that is the sort of person i am, i like giving. (no comments please!)

uwilalalalalala · 15/12/2005 20:51

Bump for hativity. Surely there are a lot more employers of nannies (or even nannies) who have a view on this.

bossykate · 15/12/2005 21:01

if you can afford it, a week's wages seems to be comme il faut. if you can't - just buy the nicest present you can think of within your budget.

hativity · 15/12/2005 22:49

thanks for the bump uwila. not sure anyone's done that for me before. (it would appear I have just bumped myself...)

I can definately manage a weeks wages for the cleaner, do you think vouchers would be more tasteful?

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 15/12/2005 23:20

I'm giving the nanny 2/3 weeks wages, the cleaner just under 1/2, and the gardener/handyman 2/3. Don't know why, the amounts just seem right, I've given that to them for the last few years and it seems to have been right.

Cleaner gets less because she only works half time and the others work full time and are much more crucial to the running of the household.

PrincessPlumPuddingHead · 15/12/2005 23:21

oh they all get nice presents as well

minky2 · 16/12/2005 19:34

bump

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 16/12/2005 19:50

Quick highjack , what would you consider appropriate for a nanny of 3 weeks (but only 1 day a week?) She brings her own little girl with her to work so I thought just a card for her and alittle present for her daughter, does that sound reasonable?

jellyjelly · 16/12/2005 20:08

I think a box or choc or wine for her and a gift for the child.

uwilalalalalala · 17/12/2005 18:49

I'd get a gift for the nanny from you and a gift for the child from your kids. I wouldn't spend a lot. A tenner on the child and £20 or £30 on her.

ISawFrannyandZooeyKissingSanta · 17/12/2005 18:52

Blimey, I never got a Christmas bonus, just a nice present. I got a cash gift when I left, about £100, which was what I was thinking of suggesting before I read the thread. You are all very generous, I hope your nannies appreciate it.

nannynick · 18/12/2005 11:39

I've never got a Xmas Nanny bonus either... though I do get a present. Waiting to see what's inside my present!

This year one of the families I babysit for sent me a Xmas card... inside was a note - a bank note! That was nice of them, haden't expected anything.

I feel that it isn't the value that's important, it's the though that counts. Giving your childcarer a present that you have spent time and effort in selecting I feel is far more important. If you know that their financial situation is getting desparate and you can afford to give money, then helping them pay off a debt I would see as being a good present.

No issy you are MORE generous! I give twothirds of a week and half a week, not 2 to 3 weeks and 1 to 2 weeks!!!!!
God you must all have thought I was mad to give 3 weeks wages as an xmas bonus

Arc2005 · 18/12/2005 20:37

I pay my nanny £350/week net and I gave her a £500 Christmas bonus. I worked it out that I pay my cleaner £35/week and give her £50 at christmas and I genuinely don't think I should be less generous with the wonderful woman who cares for my children!

I think she was pleased!
