Childminder Expenses - a booklet from HMRC

Just came across this booklet on the NICMA website, so thought I'd put a link to it here should it be useful for anyone.

Childminders - Information about Tax and National Insurance 2011/12 created by HMRC Business Education & Support Team.

It talks about what expenses can be claimed and is set out in a way which is readable by non tax experts... such as:

How to work out your profit
Income from childminding (turnover)
Less expenses and capital allowances = Profit

As a self employed person your profit is taxable. You will need to keep records
so that you can work out your income, expenses and capital allowances. You will find information on records on page 9.

Expenses
You can claim expenses that arise directly out of your childminding activities. The following are examples of the type of expense that you may claim -
Small items of expenditure

ï‚· application/registration fee
ï‚· fire blanket
ï‚· electrical socket covers
ï‚· first Aid box and contents
ï‚· NCMA (or similar) membership
ï‚· accident book or parental contracts
ï‚· public liability Insurance
ï‚· cost of cash book

It goes on like that... so looking at it I would say it's been written with the end user in mind, so you may find it an easier document to work with than BIM 52751.

Wow thanks for this

Yes, and kudos to the Northern Ireland Childminding Association for putting it on their web site - NCMA don't, they seem to reserve all their information for members only.

This new version is much better than previous versions (which you can still see on the childmindinghelp.co.uk site) - these contained some false information on mortgage interest: someone must have pointed that out to them Wink

Thanks for that! :)
