Stinking wheelie bin - what is a childminder to do?

Not a nice topic but I need some tips, if anyone has any.

I have up to 5 children a week in nappies so naturally there are a lot of soiled nappies to change. Our wheelie bin stinks! I wont go into detail but it is so bad that I dread opening it to put anything inside. I change all nappies with disposible gloves, so when I am done changing a nappy, I pull the glove over the nappy and tie a knot in it. Even though you dont have to, I chose to use gloves as sometimes I change 3 nappies one after the other and it saves having to wash my hands 3 times in a row. Each time I change a nappy I use a new pair of gloves. Anyway, I phoned the council to ask it there was some sort of nappy bin type thing, they said no. Our bins are only empties once a fortnight, so you can imagine...sometimes there are as many as 10 dirty nappies a day! I hate to admit it but we now have maggots in our wheelie bin!

What do you childminders do?

I have 9-11 children a day of which 3-8 are in nappies & I manage fine with fortnightly collection

Everything goes in the bin bagged, it stands in shade half the day and I flush as much poo as possible

Hi there!

I am a childminder who tonight had the gloves on disinfecting the bin lol! I wash it out every 2 weeks (collection every 2 weeks) in the evening once I finish work. even though it doesn't smell, more out of habit!

I double wrap and use gloves (good practise in my view). OP did not ask to be bashed about re-useables!

My Childminder used to (when my DD was in napppies) bag them and give them to us to take home. I can't say I like it but Iudnerstood why and never complained. I did used to drive by the shops and put them all in the bin in the carpark quite often though! Blush

I work in a lagre day nursery and we wear gloves, aprons and use nappy sacks for soiled nappies. The nappies go in the nappy bin and this bin is emptied twice a day into the huge wheelie bin. The wheelie bin is emptied every week by a private contractor.
I have worked in nurseries where nappies are treated as clinical waste and put into yellow clinical waste bags and collected by a specialist contractor.
As you are running a business from your home you may have to consider using a private contractor to dispose of your nappies and then pas this cost on to your parents. I am sure they would prefer this to having to take home stinky nappies. I know I would.
