KatyMac · 23/05/2011 20:49

I am about to embark on yet another nursery idea.........

OP posts:
KatyMac · 23/05/2011 20:50

It's such a good idea; even my dad agrees and he can be a bit "KatyMac' gone off on one again"

OP posts:
KatyMac · 23/05/2011 20:53

Oh God I am so pathetic

oh do tell... i liked your other nursery idea and it was a real shame it didn't happen

KatyMac · 23/05/2011 20:55

MrAnchovy has been being helpful

I'm seeing the council tomorrow & I have written a proposal

I want to set up lots of childminding settings; in council properties

OP posts:
southeastastra · 23/05/2011 21:00

i'd like to set up something for older children but have no idea how to start or get funding! still all exciting

do you mean in council halls?

KatyMac · 23/05/2011 21:02

Well ideally a council house or a flat with a garden

With after school & holiday care

nannynick · 23/05/2011 21:15

Sounds interesting. Not sure I can visualise how it would work.
Would you be a mentor to other people who would be the childminders?

KatyMac · 23/05/2011 21:20

No - I'd manage it & re-build what I have done here (less personal as it isn't my home) plus as a co-op I'd get a wage

Probably 6 childminders with the idea that it would be self managing within a time period; then I'd move on & do it again

The council can specify where they need the childcare, to the village; it's small so good for the children, it creates employment

HSMM · 23/05/2011 21:25

Sounds like a great idea KatyMac. Let us know how you get on and whether we (I) can help.

KatyMac · 23/05/2011 21:31

It's Big Community!!

OK I know it will never work

The council won't give me property
OFSTED will say we can't Childmind/CDP in a house that isn't lived in

But I have to try

thebody · 23/05/2011 21:42

sounds fantastic and a great enterprise... so why do I think somehow. someone in authority will say no.... oh yes.. because its a great idea!!!!

KatyMac · 23/05/2011 21:45

That's it isn't it

It's perfect little/no upfront costs for anyone? It's bound to fail Sad

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 23/05/2011 21:47

hmmm so you need the council to provide the houses?

i don't think they'll go for that will they? because they will have huge waiting lists of people wanting a council house...
plus wouldn't that make it a business rather than a residence???

KatyMac · 23/05/2011 21:48

I think I'd be OK for CDP

Keeping it small works; I estimate they are losing maybe 90 odd childcare spaces in July

OP posts:
nannynick · 23/05/2011 22:16

One of the members of staff could live there... they could well be someone on the council waiting list.

KatyMac · 23/05/2011 22:17

Maybe? or I could leave DH?

Actually that's not a bad idea

OP posts:
BooyHoo · 23/05/2011 22:19

katy i think it is a fantastic idea and nannynick's idea of one of the staff living there. persevere with it. i really do think it's a fab idea and can work. good luck.

MrsTeddy · 23/05/2011 22:26

Not sure how it would work but given the number of empty commercial properties could you perhaps look at converting those? Would avoid the issue with occupying council housing, council would get business rates which would help them and you could occupy otherwise empty (and vandalised) property? I've seen it done in rural areas (village shops converted into nurseries).

KatyMac · 23/05/2011 22:36

Yes but who owns them? & would they give them to me?

OP posts:
MrsTeddy · 23/05/2011 23:02

Landlord owns them and you just need to rent them like anyone else. So you'd have to cover rent but in the current climate if they're empty they may rather rent to you than leave them empty. And there might be grants etc. available to you - have you looked at Bunsiness Link, that might be useful?

ohnoshedittant · 23/05/2011 23:13

wouldn't the childminders who worked there just be like nursery nurses then?

Would they not lose some of the positives of being a childminder i.e. working from home, having your own kids there, being your own boss etc?
