Would I be able to get a nanny for 3.5 hours a day, 5 days a week for just a couple of months?

I'm freelance and I'm going for a full time short term contract. I can up my DS's hours at pre-school so he's there full time and my friend has said I can drop him at her house in the morning and she'll take him to preschool so it would just be collecting him at 3.30, bringing him home and giving him his tea.

He really doesn't need a lot of looking after - he's so tired after that he's happy watching telly really until tea, bath and bed.

I think you might struggle to get a nanny for those hours tbh. Not impossible, but I know 'after-school' nannies are in high demand and there never seem to be enough (round here anyway).

Do you know if there are any nannies doing pick-up from the pre-school because you may be able to get a short-term share, or if your DS has any friends who have nannies? Alternatively it sounds like a good job for an older teenager (maybe someone studying childcare?) or an older retired/semi-retired nanny or even a mum at the pre-school who wants to earn a bit of extra money.

Oh bugger :(

I don't know of any other nannies at the pre-school although I can go and talk to them - someone was advertising on the message board apparently. It's difficult with other parents because I won't be back until gone 7pm which is really a bit late to have a friend over if you're trying to get your children ready for bed. There is a college really near here which does childcare courses - I'd be really happy for a student to do the care so maybe that is my best avenue.

Do try the college but you may find, as I did, that the courses are full-time and the students don't finish until 4.30/5 p.m. You could also try advertising on Gumtree or childcare.co.uk. The hours might suit someone who works as a teaching assistant or in a pre-school.

You might find an ex nanny who now has their own child may do it if you don't mind them bringing their child.

I don't mind them bringing their own child at all :) I might be able to get my mate to have him until 5pm so that might widen my net a bit in terms of students.

I haven't even got an interview for this job yet :o

Could you talk to your friend and pay her to look after him?
As it is only short term, she may be happy for the money.

I would advertise on the Gumtree and in colleges, those hours may be perfect for a part time student.

gizzy1973 · 13/05/2011 20:56

where are you as this would be perfect for me - I am looking for a few hours a day and only short term

I would suggest a childcare student most sixth form students finish at 3/3.15pm and when I have ran babysitting courses for 13/14yr -17/18yr olds most of them have been looking to do this kind of thing and we suggest they charge from £2.50 an hr for the 13/14yr old with little experience upto £5 an hr for the 17/18yr old with more experience.

I suppose for 3.5hrs a day 5 days a week thats 17.5hrs you could agree £75-£85 a week sounds like a nice little wage for a student.

Or alternatively a nanny with own child there maybe a mum at the nursery your son goes to who is a previous nanny/childcarer/nursery nurse wanting to get back to work who would be interested
