Right! Nanny of 6 months announced that she is approx 7 weeks pregnant... and I'm just not sure... I was hoping someone more experienced would be able to answer some questions please...

  1. I know if told my employer I was pregnant, they'd have to do a risk assessment. Do I need to do the same? And if so, how? Is there a template?

  2. DH and I have already decided we don't want her to come back with her baby. Are we able to tell her this now or must we wait for her to give us her MatB1? Do we need to put this in writing with our reasons?

  3. Am I allowed to request she schedules antenatal appointments during school hours as she only works before and after school?

I'm sure there is loads more I need to know, but at the mo, I've drawn a blank. Feel free to share anything you think is useful to know.

Cheers in advance! =-D

1.) Yes you need to do a risk assessment. You'll find lots of useful information here www.hse.gov.uk/mothers/faqs.htm. If you use a company like NannyTax for your payroll they should have templates.

2.) Technically you don't need to say anything because she would need to request the change to her contract and you have the right to refuse. However, it's usually best to have things clear from the outset so I would probably just say to make it clear. She may of course not want to bring her baby to work so you should approach the subject sensitively so you don't offend her. She may well decide that if she can't bring her baby that she wishes to terminate her employment instead. She could give you several months notice if you both agree which would give you plenty of time to find someone else. You don't need to put this in writing because your current contract of employment stands (assuming it states the child she will be caring for is your DS)

3.) No. She has a legal right to attend antenatal appointments. You can ask her to schedule them during the day where possible but you cannot insist.

Congratulate her, ask her how she is regularly and make sure she has access to somewhere to lie down and the opportunity to go to the loo/eat regularly. The same as you would for any other pregnant person.

you're a star, thanks for that!

I've just phoned her and requested a written letter informing me that she's preggers and arranged for the risk assessment on Wednesday...

You're welcome Smile

She doesn't have to tell you in writing until 15 weeks before EDD but there's nothing to stop you confirming the info she's given you in writing either by email or letter.

Make sure you get her to read and sign risk assessment and that she understands it.

You do have the right to request to see an appointment card, a good idea to do this from the beginning. If for any reason you start to suspect she is making up appointments it is harder to ask to see the appointment card if you haven't from the start.

I would just say be very sensitive about saying she can't bring the baby with her as it's very early days, i can't believe she's told you so quickly!

i am 21 weeks pg and had NO CHOICE what so ever in the day or time of my scan.
Midwife quite inflexible too, as i can only go on 1 day per week, and can only book the next avaliable appointment that day, not a time the suits me

You can ask her to schedule them while the children are at school, but she doesnt have to, and she has to be allowed to go to whatever appointments she has, whenever they are.
