Nanny bringing own child – a few questions...

I?m due to go back to work in a few months? time and am currently sorting out childcare for my DS, who will be nearly 1yo. I have primarily been speaking to CMs, however, I have also been in touch with a nanny who could potentially look after DS at our home and would bring her own DS with her. Her DS is 2-3 months younger than mine.

I have a few questions:

  • Do these kind of arrangements typically work well (for both the nanny and the family)?
  • would 2 boys so close together in age be a good combination? (sounds like pretty hard work to me!!!)
  • We?d like her to voluntarily register with OFSTED so that we can use childcare vouchers. If she does this at our request would we pay all associated costs or is it reasonable for her to pay for some of them? (OFSTED registration fees, insurance premiums and the cost of taking the necessary courses.)
  • Any idea of usual rates? Would it be similar to a CM? We?re in South London and the nanny isn?t qualified in childcare or particularly experienced (3 years in a couple of previous part-time roles).
  • I?m assuming we?ll need to get a double buggy. Is there any other equipment that we?d need? If so, who's responsible for getting it?
  • Has anyone experienced any problems with this kind of arrangement that I might not have thought of?

Many thanks in advance!

Don't know I've never done it. There are people who post on here who have had nannies bring their own child, and nannies who post on here who take their own child to work with them. Like anything I guess, it may or may not work out depending on the dynamics involved between all the people, children and adults.

Sounds fine to me, two children can be easier than one as they entertain each other. It does however mean that you will need all the same sort of physical equipment as you would for twins - so double buggy, two highchairs (though Totseat can work well to concert a chair for a baby/toddler), two places for them to nap.

  • We'd like her to voluntarily register with OFSTED so that we can use childcare vouchers. In my view it is reasonable for you to pay the annual registration fee. Other than that all other costs should be the nannies as they benefit them (so they pay for training, first aid, insurance). The process can take many months, especially if they don't have the correct training already (I see you say they are not qualified, that could be an issue).

  • Any idea of usual rates? Would it be similar to a CM? We're in South London and the nanny isn't qualified in childcare or particularly experienced (3 years in a couple of previous part-time roles).

Check local job adverts for an idea on rates. It can seem to range hugely in London. I would say that you are probably looking around the £8 to £10 gross per hour. Ultimately it's up to you and the nanny to decide upon a rate that is suitable given the circumstances. It is therefore MORE than a childminder would be, especially once you have added on the additional costs you will have as the employer, such as Employers NI, running the payroll, food and outings, use of your home. See Total Cost Of A Nanny

  • I'm assuming we'll need to get a double buggy. Is there any other equipment that we'd need? If so, who's responsible for getting it?

Think it will need to be discussed with the nanny. Car seats for example may be needed if nanny uses their car. Nanny may be able to supply things for their own child.

Hi, I posted a v similar question recently, here is the thread with some helpful comments I got. I did hire that nanny in the end although she hasn't started yet so don't yet know how well it's going to work out!

Thanks nannynick and Jacksterbear, that's really useful!
