My nanny-to-be is OFSTED reg'd but doesn't know what I mean when I ask about liability insurance

I thought liability insurance (for the nanny, not for me the employer, I have mine) was a pre-requisite for OFSTED registration? Shouldn't she have this? When I asked her she said she didn't know, and perhaps her previous employer had sorted this out for her. But I want her to be responsible for arranging and paying for this.

Can you tell me exactly what she should have and what I need to tell her to do if she hasn't?

Public Liability insurance. The nannies responsibility to get it and pay for it. Available through various specialist childcare insurance companies.

Will post some links to companies when I get home this evening.

ask to see her certificates

Does she understand if you call it 'nanny insurance'?

Very odd if she doesn't have it, although given OFSTED's history of inconsistency I wouldn't dismiss the possibility.

Ah now I had this happen too where a nanny I was about to hire didn't know what I was talking about, even though she was ofsted registered.

I rang up OFSTED and they told me they don't check the liability insurance is all in place. They just make it a condition on paper that the nanny sorts it before she starts working.

So it's up to the nanny and no safeguards from Ofsted to make sure she's gone ahead and done it.

I suppose if she got spot-checked by Ofsted, it would become apparent. But there didn't seem to be any other method of following it up.

Thanks all. doozle that makes more sense. So I need to tell her to get it sorted! nannynick those links would be great, thanks.

Yes, technically her Ofsted registration is invalid if she doesn't sort it out.

Most nannies go for Morton Michel

As Frak says, most use Morton Michel.

The other providers are:
Nannyinsure
NCMA

Not sure if there are others. However those three are the main ones.

Ask to see the certificate of insurance. It is done digitally these days, so nanny will need to print off the PDF from the insurance broker/company.

Have you seen all the other paperwork as well, such as the Ofsted certificate, training certificate(s) inc First Aid?

Maybe they have just overlooked getting the insurance, even though it is a criteria for Ofsted registration.

Insurance renews annually, so check expiry date on the policy.

Thanks v much. Yes have seen and got copies of other certs - OFSTED reg, CRB, first aid, NVQs etc.
