I think accident reports should be done the same day - I try to get mine done as soon as the child has calmed down and the mess is cleared up. I think that would be the norm

The second is difficult we hardly ever watch TV with our mindees - but it does have it's place. Could you ask her to moniter how much your ds watches - so that you know how much to allow at home....iyswim

Definately the same day prior to collection for accident/incidents.
It may be a daily routine that the TV goes on for a particular programme at the end of the day. eg I know the times of Balamory and often schedule watching it into our day. It can also be used to quieten nosey toddlers who would otherwise leap all over other children's parents with 1001 questions at collection times.
Do you have a daily diary which lets you know all about what has been done during the day? If not could you introduce one and take it from there. The best way is probably to ask her totally directly that you have noticed the TV on a lot and would like to know a bit more about the times that it is used during the day. You are completely entitled to have frank and open discussion about it, and I wouldn't mind at all if a parent were to ask me as long as it was a fair and polite approach.

Maybe you could ask if he smiles (IYKWIM) at certain programmes because he might like alittle bit of tv at home and see what she says and this would open up the discussion .

How about that you want to ensure he doesn't watch too much telly at home, so how much does he watch here, so that it can be added to the time at home.

That's not too accusatory is it?

I think the form should be filled in straight away - I always do as soon as I can. For example, one of my mindees fell over at toddlers last week and banged her cheek (poor little thing) and my book is at home. I therefore waited until they were having lunch (as that's what I do as soon as I get back) and then completed the form. Otherwise, I do as Katymac does and complete it as soon as the child is ok for me to.

As for tv, it could look like I have my on all day but I don't - I'd have no problem in a parent asking me about it though. I'd just explain that it's on first thing when they arrive for my own ds (gets switched off when they walk in) and I put it on for a short amount of time when I am cooking the evening meal to calm them day ready for dinner and also to stop any problems when I'm in the kitchen (as even though I can watch them through the hatch, they'll quite often play up if they think I'm not there )

When I was a cm one of my children had delayed speech.I also found out he had no tv at home.As consequence I always had either tv or radio on so that he was always listening to several different types of speech,of course I spoke to him but even if he was playing he had sounds-does that make sense. So telly is not all evil.

blodwen · 06/11/2005 18:09

On the other hand, I make an effort not to have background sound all the time, either speech or music. I think it can be difficult, especially for a child with speech or language delays, to hear others talking over background sound, or to make themselves heard. I try to talk to the children about what we are doing (sometimes it seems almost non-stop!). No offence meant, just another opinion .

No its fine each to their own it is just something that was explored as an option by his speech therapist it seemed to work quite well too along with the mackaton and made a difference.

That's good to hear .
