Short Term Au Pair/Nanny

My Italian boss has asked me to look at options for hiring a nanny/au pair for 4 weeks in the summer, most likely in Italy and will probably include a 2 week holiday somewhere else. He is separated and has 5 kids and simply wants an extra pair of hands/eyes to help out with the kids....He also wants me to look at hiring the same for his sister but for 2/3 months in Italy, again most likely including a holiday somewhere else.

So, where to start ? I could use au pair agencies, however from what I can gather they are not employed by the agency but by the hiring person...so he would be responsible for paying tax/NI for the person (they both want British Au pairs) so cannot see the point in an agency - especially for an au pair....

I was thinking of contacting the local college and asking about students on their childcare courses, but just don't know where to start documenting the whole process, pitfalls and all....

I would appreciate any guidence, recommendations you can give me :)

Thanks muchly

Well if employed in Italy it wouldn't be tax and NI in the UK and they may well be paying under the threshold anyway...But I'm not entirely clear what the arrangement would be?

What kind of hours would it be (for both jobs)? What mind of duties are involved? What age are the children?

Most people, if not using an agency, go for one of the au pair websites like Aupairworld or greataupair. Then you place your ad and wait for people to contact you/contact the profiles of people you like the look of.

Local college is a good starting point as well.

But first you need to be clear what the job is, so what's being asked isn't unreasonable, and what the person spec is, because there's a lot of choice out there (and 99% are totally unsuitable).

I know an Italian student (speaks English, but not British - not sure if that's a huge problem) who worked in the UK for a bit as a summer au pair. DM me if you want more info/me to check if she'd be interested.
