Bosses let you leave early - do you still get full pay?!

I'm a new nanny and have begun working full time but on Friday MB came home early and said I could go - it was half an hour before I was due to leave, she also did this on Tuesday so an hour in total. It wasn't until I got home and my Boyfriend asked if I'd still get paid that I thought about it. I didn't think to ask - If your bosses let you leave early, are you still paid for that time? As it was her decision to let me go, not me needing to go iyswim?

I was paid the same whether I went home early or on time and whether I started earlier or finished later. It all balances out. I think you should assume you are still getting paid.

Depends what your contract says. Technically I take the view that you should be however if your contract has weaselly wording about only paying you for hours worked then they may not.

Of course if they don't pay you then start charging every time they have you leave late. I pretty much guarantee that scenario will occur more often.

I always pay when I let nanny / au pair go early. Don't know any respectable employer who wouldn't.

My nanny always goes home early, has NEVER stayed late. Always gets full pay.
However, the odd time she has stayed until the time she is paid for I can tell she is not happy (always asks to the second it is time to leave/ even interrupting my husband on a work call to do so!)
So, I'd say appreciate the early finishes. I'm sure you'll get paid and it will make up for a time your employers may be late.

Knackeredmother · 16/04/2011 15:16

That should say always asks to GO the second it is finishing time

Apart from the interupting the work call and seemingly not being happy to work until the end time I don't see why she shouldn't leave exactly at the finish time :)

Yes, you should still get paid regardless. I often let my nanny go early.

nannyl · 16/04/2011 20:28

yes you should be paid

you were avaliable to work, and had planned to work.

My bosses had to give me 4 weeks notice of any time the didnt need me (ie the holiday they chose for me) Anything over and above their 2 week choice i was paid for, also anytime i left early, as wouldnt have had 4 weeks notice

My nanny used to get paid even when I let her go home early, never occurred to me to do otherwise - if she's contracted to do the full hours, she would still be paid if she went home early -sometimes up to 2 hours early - especially on days that i was working from home and managed to finish my telecons early.

Conversely, there were times that my train would run late by 10 or 20 mins late (not that often but has happened) and she would always refuse extra payment each time i offered it. Some give and take works both ways really as long as neither party takes the mick and started taking each other for granted.

Agree SometimesIama

A past employer used to employ me 7.30 - 5.30 Most the time I worked 7.30 - 5 , and would finish early one day a week sometimes leaving anytime as early as 1pm and the latest being 3.30 ish. So I didn't mind when she ran late, or had to leave for work 10 minutes early. I knew for the couple of times I was working an extra half hour actually I'd end up with a 2 hour early finishes.
