Choosing between jobs

nbee84 · 02/04/2011 20:20

I've had 2 interviews and 2 second interviews for nanny positions this week.

Grin I'm so pleased and lucky to have been offered both of them Grin

But the downside is that they are both lovely families, the children from both families are so cute and gorgeous and my heart sinks when I think that I have to turn one of them down. I feel like I am letting them down after such positive interviews Sad

Awwww. It's a lovely position to be in though - choosing between 2 good jobs!

Does either have any clear advantages over the other?

nbee84 · 02/04/2011 20:46

No - both very similar. I would enjoy either of them. Both long term too - which is important to me.

I'd choose the one with the nicest house then! Wink

nbee84 · 02/04/2011 21:12

Both very similar!!!

Then I can't see how you would make any better decision that you couldn't make by flipping a coin! Nothing to lose Grin

Well done!

I was in the same position last month, two lovely jobs offered but I took the one which was less money but closer to me. Then I lost my home! Sigh.... No, thats no help at all!

If live-out, I would select based on travel time.

I would not select on how nice house was. Last night I was babysitting at a multi-million house (probably built within the last 15 years) which you may think would be nice. It wasn't in my view - as it didn't have character, had white mostly everywhere and thin plasterboard internal walls. I far prefer an older house with character.
I would also look at how clean the house was - I like it to have the played in look, not the clinical cleaned look, if you know what I mean. I also tend to look for books - some people have lots of books, others don't seem to have any. Do children in both families have books in their bedroom?

nbee84 · 03/04/2011 10:48

I didn't see the bedrooms of one the families - but they definitely strike me as the sort of people that would read to their children a lot anyway.

Both houses were similar - tidy but not immaculate, plenty of toys around, good sized gardens, though one more country and the other more town. Both same travel times.

I interview the parents as much as they interview me and I know I could work well with both families. If I could work for both I would Smile

One is an hour less per day and also has days together while the other has a split week.

Sad samedi. Hope you found a nice new home.

Id go for the hour less and days together. Will you be looking for another to go with it? Even if not right now, I'd do that to keep my options open as you never know when things might change and you may need a temp/another perm job to go with it and it's a lot easier to find p/t jobs with days together than seperate. Plus if not you get your working week over with quicker Smile

CharlieCoCo · 03/04/2011 15:01

i had to choose between 2jobs once which were both good but one had slightly older children n the other had a child at home during the day, one was a 5 day one was 4 but i liked them both. in the end it cam down to one parent offering me sky tv in my room lol.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/04/2011 17:03

the shorter day with non spilt week then

i have turned jobs down as didnt have a dishwasher before, tho accepted another one :)

both near me/lovely children/nice parents/car/good money etc and was stuck which to chose

eurycantha · 04/04/2011 20:44

I would agree with Blondes as I generally do! that I d have the non split job I don`t go for the wealthiest family either I was offered two jobs once ,one with more money ,both nice families .I went with the slightly less money because there was afield at the end of the garden with sheep and a pony in it.

nbee84 · 04/04/2011 20:55

Well, I went for the shorter day one. Felt uncomfortable phoning the agency to turn down the other one, but reminded myself that I'm not the only good nanny out there Smile and that they will find someone else.

Now I feel I can get excited about my new job Grin I'll have a 9 month old and nearly 3 year old and I start in a month. Can't wait. I'll miss the kids from my current job, but as Mum will be at home with them there'll be plenty of opportunities to see them.
