Well, thats it really - my car insurance would go up from £300 to over £600 if I want it insured for business use. Im a bit gobsmacked. My home insurance didnt change at all! What do you do, or do childminders just walk absolutely everywhere?!!

Mine was less

Have you thought about changing your ins company?

Quasimojo · 31/03/2011 12:52

Yes, I usually shop around but tried my current one first. Glad to hear it may just be them then!

But isn't the new law just in about not discriminating against male drivers which is putting everyone insurance up this year

suzikettles · 31/03/2011 12:53

Mine didn't change at all - it was only so I could use it for the odd business trip rather than specifying carrying other people but I don't think they're interested in that are they? Just the mileage.

Insurance generally has gone up a lot in the last 12 months

I use Bell or Tesco have been great in the past

Quasimojo · 31/03/2011 13:20

My price without the business use was similar to last year, so I supect its something odd about the insurer. I havent had a chance to phone around yet but will do so as soon as I can.

Average car insurance rise this year is 40%!!!!!

HSMM · 31/03/2011 13:28

Just renewed mine. Approx same cost as last year. No extra charge for CM insurance.

Shop around

Mine went up over £30 in 3 weeks, 9th March until yesturday Shock

ChildrenAtHeart · 31/03/2011 14:45

Mine went up £100 but that was cos DH pranged the car in the ice last year lol. Have you tried going through one of the specialist childminding brokers? Bluefin & Morton Michel. I've always gone with Bluefin (used to be Layton Blackham) in the past but went with MM this time as they got me a better deal & was a better overall service

Quasimojo · 31/03/2011 20:25

Ha! Have shopped around and got a quote of £170 which seems quite a bit better that £600! Definitely worth the time looking around Smile

What a difference!

Mine's due in August, we've just bought a newer car, a Ford Galaxy for my family use and childminding and I'm going to try Bluefin which is one of NCMA member benefits.

We've had to pay an extra £85 till August tho. I've a son who is 20 and we can't afford insurance for him on my DH's KIA Rio, they want £2,000 just for a 1.4 engine so I think he will be using the bus and walking/cycling for a little while longer!

I think it was unfair the EU poked their noses in and decided girls should be equal when we are better drivers and have less accidents.
