Hi all, Anyone who has an AuPair, how did you fill in about the job requirements etc. Bearing in mind that the Au Pair 'helps' around the house and therefore you are giving them stipent instead of payment - therefore they don't pay tax. There are all these questions about job titles and descriptions and company names. I filled our family cencus in, but am stuck on the au pair. As we officially pay her less than £95 per week she should be exempt from payments etc. according to thiswww.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/Taxes/WorkingAndPayingTax/DG_10027015

What did everyone else do?

Ah found you!

I would put her down as a live in domestic employee, her employer's main business is 'private household', her employer's name would be your surname, for job description I would just put 'childcare and household duties'.

You have the reasons why they don't pay tax confused though. It's not because it's a stipend instead of payment, it's because their wage includes an allowance for the board and lodging you provide. They are exempt from minimum wage by virtue of living in, not because of their job title. If they were doing the same job but living out they would be entitled to minimum wage.

In any case as you pay below the threshold you don't need to deduct tax/NI on her behalf (although the situation would be more complex if she had another job).
