We may be using our current childminders daughter ( who has just finished NVQ 2 in childcare) as a live-in nanny when we move to new area in Sept. We need her to look after our 2yr old fulltime and 7yr old before and after school for term time only. she is planning to live-in during the week. I have two questions? 1. how much to pay (does £200net a week sound ok plus board and lodging) 2. i work as a teacher so she is not needed in the holidays - how would this work with regard to pay. can i just say she must have her holiday in school holidays? advice and any shared experiences welcome. thanks

  1. If she is only 18 this could be about right, otherwise if she has some decent experience (not working with her mum) it sounds a bit low assuming you are not in a low wage area?
  1. Yes you can just give school holidays ha holiday. Bear in mind that it is much more tax efficient to pay her an average salary over 52 weeks the same as you get - for instance £200pw for 33 weeks works out about £126 so there would be no tax or NI to pay, whereas £200pw net is £228 gross plus £13 Employer's NI.

When I had a live in nanny (in London) I paid her £250 PW gross, but she was very experienced. Also had to provide food and obviously pay bills - my DP's blood pressure used to go up every time she put the heating on and he could practically see the pound notes burning along with the boiler lighting up!!

You can put exact holiday dates in the contract if you want. Given that you will only want to pay her for some of the holiday you will need to decide what you want her to do for the rest of the time. It would be reasonable to contract to have her work for you only from September to July each year, leaving her to find alternative work over the summer. It would be nice to give her the option of working for another family whilst living at your home but that would be up to you.
