Title says it all really: would anybody be prepared to share the template they use for a nanny-family communication diary, please?

A5 lined book and e-mail.
Don't really do a day-to-day diary. Mind you, I've been there nearly 3 years now, so unless a child is ill I don't document things.

You could create a sheet, something like Nanny Log (modify it to UK English if you like)

My Day Diaries is a pre-printed book which could be used.

In previous jobs I have used a big desk diary as it gives you enough space to write in all of the days activities and on goings. Plus you can easily see what day things have happened on as the date is printed at the top.
In my new job I just brought a big A4 lined pad. On each day I just write the date and then what's been happening that day along with any accidents, events or incidents.
I usually have a cross over period at the end of the day to talk with the parents about what has happened during the day but it is always handy to have a written account incase you have to trace back any food allergies or behaviour patterns.

I work in a share with one family just use a hard backed book which i date
in the back i have the numbers and addreses of friends pus their various diskikes likes allergies food.
The other have a printed one with the same names addresses dislikes etc also as one of my charges is in his final year at primary a tick besides the childrens names who are allowed to walk home alone left at home for the five minutes that i nip the younger two to dance.
Both i do the general day to day stuff that we have done future playdates comming up school info they use it to say when shopping is comming a delivery baby sitting holidays.
I find as a nanny its always very usuful although there are days when i just do not get the time to fill it in

We use a normal week-to-view academic diary.

I write each day what we've done, what they've eaten (which food and how much was eaten), how much the youngest slept, any accidents/medicine and expenses for that day.

We use the year planner thing to keep track of holiday (who has taken what/when).

At the back in the names and addresses bit we have mum/dad work numbers/mobiles, grandparents numbers, friends numbers and then things like the doctor, the school etc.

In the notes section we keep track of expenses month by month (i.e. the total expenditure for January, Feb etc not an itemised list!).

It also has a plastic wallet thing in the back and we keep receipts, membership cards, money off vouchers etc in there.

i also used a normal week to view diary
I wrote in PENCIL the plans
I wrote in pen what we did at the end of the day (rubbed out the pencil)
I might write
"finished breakfast, wet napy change, then to toddler group carpark 50p, toddlers £2. Enjoyed plaing with Bill & Ben and had banana snack. Home for lunch, jacket potatoe, cheese, satsuma and a yogurt. Wet nappy change then nap from 12.25 - 2.30. Change nappy then
Drank 5oz milk then went for a walk to the park, enjoyed plaing on the swings, but slid off the end of the slide, fine after a cuddle. Back home for a play before tea, spag bol, rice pud, then short play before bath.

£2.50 4 miles

In the notes section id write weekly expenses, weekly milage, and mileage calculation for money owed eg 12 miles X 40p = £4.80

this system worked for us and we had plenty of room

Contact numbers for mummy / daddy / ME / granny / Drs etc at the front

In the back name & adress system, the names / addresses / phone numbers of my nanny friends and the houses where they worked (so If ever there was a problem MB / DB could see in the diary where we were, and contact them if necessary, (it never was but you never know)

also a page with the names and contact numbers / email addresses for all the class / group leaders etc etc.

I used the diary for me, but the idea was if ever i was ill, or something MB / DB / temp nanny could easily see what our plans were, and would have all the information to clarify where groups were, or change plans with nanny friends as necessary etc

ohnoshedittant · 28/03/2011 21:08

I also meant to say I find that dated pages useful as we put in term dates/future plans/holiday plans/hospital appointments etc.

Mum and Dad also use it for the weekend to log the kids social events. I will sometimes note in the sat/sun box things that mum and dad need to do e.g. rsvp fred or DC1 homework for Monday etc

Thinking about it I don't know what I'd do without it!!

We have normal diary with day to a page. Both ourselves and our nanny fill it in. It covers sleeps, food she ate and nappy changes. If dd is ill also says when medicines have been given. At the bottom we briefly what she did that day and anything new that has happened.

SuiGeneris · 28/03/2011 21:33

Thank you- all v interesting. Our nanny works part-time so normal diary might be overkill. On the other hand, she needs to know what happened when she was not there and we need to keep track of what's happening too. Off to buy discounted diary...
