Employer's liability for nannies- can you advise where you got yours

Am about to employ nanny (start April) and been reading the threads on what you need to do. A few have mentioned employer's liability and that it may be covered on your house insurance. I checked with mine (Co-op) and they said not and also that it would need a public liability policy to cover this. Can those of you who have insurance cover advise me who you are with and what policy type you have. Many thanks

You could try Hiscox 0845 213 8900 but call them, don't try to use the online system as what you would be wanting is going to be quite unusual for them to deal with. Remember that you are an Employer with 1 employee who works from your Residential Home and you don't have members of the public visiting your business. Those I feel are key things to tell them. No idea how much such insurance might cost.

Looking at a sample of the Co-Op Home Contents insurance policy, Injury to an Employee is excluded. So it would appear that your current insurer can not be of assistance to you.

You may want to get quotes from other home insurance companies and end your Co-Op insurance, as covering a domestic employee is fairly usual for a home contents policy - example LloydsTSB Home Options insurance Key Facts. If cost of specialist Employers Liability insurance is expensive, then consider switching your home contents insurance away from CoOp - get quotes from other providers to include Employers Liability insurance and see how much extra the cost is over your current CoOp policy.

Morton Michel (who are a specialist childcare insurance supplier) do a freestanding Employers Liability policy which should obviously be very suitable, but I have no idea how much it costs.

Many household policies do include EL for domestic staff, so it may be cheaper to switch.

I have mine on the ordinary home insurance. I just had to advise them but they did also make a few extra exclusions to my policy about theft (only pays out in the event of a break in).

Tbh, when I used to supervise the selling of insurance a few years ago liability for people working on the premises was covered as standard and we were a brokerage.

thanks, think will seek out an alternative home insurance policy as my current one due to finish during April anyway

Hello,

I have just posted this on another thread too that is similar...as mranchovy says, morton michel were who i have just arranged a policy with and it cost me around 140 pound for the year.

I was looking on the internet for employer liability for my nanny as my house insurer doesn't cover it anymore just like you and after a few phone calls around came across morton michel who sell a policy just for employer liability (which was my 140 pund one) as well as house insurance with employer liability added in.

its so hard to find anywhere that seems to sell it so HTH somebody :)
