On my to do list:

  • Check references and get all certificates etc for nanny's qualifications
  • Draw up employment contract and agree terms with nanny
  • Register with payroll / tax agency
  • Get employer liability insurance
  • Sign up to childcare voucher scheme at work
  • Start putting together folder of useful info for nanny (contact no's, details of DCs' routines, local playgroups etc)

Get nanny to:

  • upgrade her car insurance to business use
  • get nanny insurance
  • chase up her OFSTED registration (being processed)

Is there anything I've forgotten?

Sounds right.

Employer liability insurance is usually part of your household insurance policy, so you probably won't need to get that... though do dig out the policy and check you have it in your policy.

If she's getting OFSTED reg already she should have nanny insurance as it's a requirement to register? Double check she has everything else she needs as otherwise it could be a long wait withOFSTED sending things back and forth.

Ah, great, thanks for those tips.

I'm hoping that the payroll/tax, and the childcare vouchers, will all become clear when I register for them, as I have no idea at the moment how they will work!

did u not do the first one BEFORE you offered her the job? didnt she show you her certificates in the interview?

if shes in process of being ofsted regsitered she should already have insurance as that is one of their requirements.

Jacksterbear · 21/03/2011 10:56

Charlie, no, I offered her the job subject to reference checks. Yeah she did show me some certs but I want copies so I can double check they match up with her cv etc. Only had time for quick glance in interview.

Very sensible to verify certificates against CV the awarding body and nothing wrong with offering subject to references. I wish all employers were as thorough!
