Pregnant Nanny...

glitternanny · 17/03/2011 20:56

I'm a nanny who has just found out she's pregnant and interested in other views from nannies and parents who have gone on this journey.

I had 2 jobs - A) both will be at school from sept but as far as I know they would be retaining me - I've offered to take on ironing and volunteer at school. and B) one at school and a 3yo in dec.

My baby will be due in mid Nov.

So I'm kinda thinking working of working til half-term in October (all being well of course) and then maybe starting mat leave.

Having 3-6 months off and returning to work.

I get my 10 KIT days through Mat leave - not sure if this would be each job or between the 2 of them.

I guess I could return to work early on job A as its easier and closer to home.

My OH works shifts so i'm hoping if it works out on days he's off during the week and hasn't just finished nights baby will stay with him.

I appreciate I'll need to renegotiate my salary a little.

Any thoughts/experiences very welcome.

I'm hoping to make my booking and scan appointment as convenient to work as possible (i.e. first/last thing) - I haven't had any time off from either job sick or for drs or anything since I've started. So hopefully one will fall on one job and the other will fall on the other.

And then tell them my news after the scan.

Hey congratulations

Im 14 weeks and had NO SAY WHAT SO EVER in when my 12week sacn would be... was told day and time, and (for me at least) it was non negotiable in terms of work (as they have to let you be off etc)

I was SO shocked that i had no say in it... just be prepared, maybe your area might be more accomodating than mine!

Also good plan to wait until scan, but prepare to feel really ill, and you might not be able to hide it... I was signed off from 6 weeks, and hospitalised at 7 weeks. Am 14 weeks now and still off sick Sad

Everything you are planning and saying sounds reasonable and sensible. Smile

Good Luck with the rest of your pregnancy

had a feeling you could't go back to one job early without losing smp from the other as well...but don't know why i thnk that. might be wrong but worth checking if that is important to you.

glitternanny · 20/03/2011 21:07

Thank you!

I'll find out!

I would clarify with Job A that they will be retaining you tbh before relying on it and making plans around it. They can legitimately make you redundant from September if the children will be at school as the job as it stands will no longer exist. They will have to make other arrangements while you are on Maternity Leave which probably won't be a nanny, so I would be very surprised if they decided they wanted you back to do ironing and volunteer at school (which you wouldn't be able to do anyway if you had to bring your own baby to work).

As an employer September would seem like a very sensible time to draw a line under the relationship and for both to make other arrangements.

Congratulations!

I'd agree you may not get any choice in appointments however telling them early is not a bad thing as you benefit immediately from certain protections as soon as you do.

They don't have to let baby come too, even if you plan to leave baby with your OH when he isn't working you may still need childcare for when he is/can't look after baby. It's worth clarifying that very early on as otherwise I suspect they will want to make other arrangements from September.

I think, if you qualify for SMP on both jobs you qualify for KIT on both jobs but when you return to work your SMP stops regardless of which job you return to.

you can probably choose the time when you see midwife / doctor but scan dates are usually given to you and very hard to change

congratulations by the way

RitaMorgan · 23/03/2011 11:27

If you want to return to those jobs, I'd have them confirm in writing that they will be keeping you after September before you tell them you're pregnant - then they won't be able to make you redundant because of the pregnancy.

Be prepared for them not to allow you to bring the baby to work with you though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/03/2011 12:45

congrats, you say that oh will have your baby shift depending and that you are willing to renegotiate your salary (if you take your baby with you)

this is depending if the families want you back with your baby, they may not

Sorry I missed your replies.

I'm hoping they will take me back but that is their decision.
