the going rate is 40p per mile, so £40 per 100 miles - or in your case for 20miles £8 per week

better to jot down the miles then submit toal each week/month rather than say i do x no of miles so £8 a week is fine

saying that it has been 40p for years and petrol keeps rising

Record all journeys. I have a notepad in the car and record location plus mileage. Then submit a claim monthly to your employer. With luck they will agree to 40p per mile. Any more than that is taxable. That rate is up to 10000 miles a year. Rate drops after that mileage.

MillsAndDoom · 14/03/2011 11:11

I think 40p a mile is the standard rate

its been 40p a mile for ages and ages i think with the price of petrol it should be going up

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 14/03/2011 11:23

Even if they don't give you the full 40p a mile you should be able to reclaim it by doing a tax return.

Danthe4th · 14/03/2011 12:56

Its still fixed at 40p and will be for the next 10 years!! i'm sure thats what I read the other day but I can't remember where, I asked dp to check as he works for hmrc but he hasn't heard of any increases due.

HappyAsIAm · 14/03/2011 16:00

Most people agree 40 pence per mile as anything over that is tax deductible. I am a nanny employer ie a mum and this is what we pay. Incidentally, its what my employer pays too.

Figgyrolls · 14/03/2011 16:04

Yup my employer pays 40p for the first 10,000 miles then 25p per mile after that. Tis set by govt as far as tax is concerned iirc.
