Or similar - ie proper part-time job paying tax/ni etc? She is from Slovakia, so in EU. Someone told me she would need to register with the Home Office...???

She is unable to work until she gets a National Insurance Number - took my ap over 6 months to get one.

judging by the number of 20 year old eastern european girls behind the tills in my local sainsbury I would guess the answer is yes...!

Yes, as an EU national she eligible for work over here. The ascension countries need to register with the Home Office within one month of starting employment. This will cost the employee about £50. (her responsibility, not yours)

Further to this, I wonder, if she is an EU citizen, is she your au pair or an employee. IF employee, then make sure you get the lower tax bracket, not her new employer.
