I childmind 2 children from the same family. Next week (well Sunday to be exact) the mum is going away for 5 days on a course in London. The dad is going with her for the week.
The children's grandparents are going to come and stay on Sunday night.
Then the routine is going to be drop off at me Monday 7.30am then they will go to work, pick up (I've been asked to look after children till6) look afte children overnight then drop off with me in morning. This will be the routine till Friday hometime.
however the grandparents live and work a 1 hour 45min drive away.
What happens if one of the children has an accident when they are with me, and parents are away and grandparents a 1.45 min drive away?
What if the older one has an accident at nursery?
I just fel that I am going to be having full care of these children for 10.5 hours a day, 5 days a week, with the nearest emergency contact a fair drive away.

I just found this out this morning by the way, it was the first I'd heard of it.
Am I over reacting?

yes

Them's the breaks, I'm afraid

As long as you have the relevant emergency contact numbers for the GPs it'll be fine.

If there IS an emergency then you put your emergency plan into action the same as normal.

Flisspaps · 04/03/2011 15:08

Yes.

You are having a panic, the what-ifs and omgs are vanishingly small in reality

Chin up

maybe get the parents to write a letter giving you permission to give consent for emergency treatment should they need to go to hospital in the event that grandparents can not be waited for.

HSMM · 04/03/2011 16:35

We were told on our first aid course that letters consenting to emergency treatment are not worth the paper they are written on. Apparently only the parents (or equivalent) and the consultant are able to give consent. We were told not to worry, we can inform them of specific religious/cultural requirements and then leave the consultant to it.

tbh i dont see it any different to if my mb is at work in london or away on a course over an hours drive away

even if something happened, she still wouldnt be home for at least 60/90mins trains permitting

sure all will be fine :)

LadyBiscuit · 04/03/2011 16:42

I was quite often away for work more than 2 hours away when my DS was with his CM. I don't think I even bothered telling her.

maidbloke · 04/03/2011 21:47

Yes. Make sure you have contact numbers for the grampies but I'm sure you won't need them.

:)

NannyTreeSally · 05/03/2011 12:56

I'd mention your concerns to the parents and also make sure you have all of the contact numbers. Hopefully you won?t need them!

looneytune · 05/03/2011 13:18

Sorry to butt in but when I was having a mindee for 4 days in total (i.e. here overnight), everyone on here was telling me I shouldn't because of this very problem (they were out of the country and emergency contact about 4 hours drive away). I agree it should be fine but just wanted to say I can see why you were checking :)

Danthe4th · 05/03/2011 22:05

You should have the permission forms for the doctors anyway, as you say if its an emergency the doctors will get on with it. Anything not so serious they will wait for the parents to arrive.
It will be fine.

pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly · 05/03/2011 22:08

I wouldn't worry about it.

KirktonJean · 07/03/2011 08:03

My fears might be abated as they have been caught out!Hmm. Not got mindees till 8.30 now
