CMs - vaccinations (or not!)

Hi
One of my potential mindees parents don't believe in vaccinations. How would this affect other mindees? Is it just this mindee at risk or would it affect them for some reason? Anyone know anything about this? Do you think it's not worth taking this one on due to the risk? Just can't get the issue straight in my head, would appreciate your thoughts.

No vaccinations are obligatory. You can't really exclude on that basis. It's the parents who take the risk with their child by deciding not to vaccinate.

I was just worried if they came in with some medieval disease and one of the others for some reason was immune compromised it could be potential risk? Or would you think that the ones who had been immunised would be ok? She does attend a nursery at the mo so they must have thought it was safe...

Well ... no vaccination gives 100% protection. My friednd's LO came down with measels but he had both MMRs. It's a personal choice if the parent decides not to vaccinate. Those children don't pose any greater risk to others than children who had all the vaccinations. I mind a LO who never had any ...

I think the risk is that non vaccinated child could expose a disease to a child who was not yet old enough for the vax. So, say a 2 year old catches measels and brings it in contact with another mindee who is only 6 months old and therefore hasn't had the MMR / singles.

But, I also think that enough people do not vaccinate that you can't really be responsible for this situation. I would take the child, maybe inform other parents of non vaccinated child, but beyond that I think you are free to accept this child.

I don't think you can inform other parents that a child in your has not been vaccinated. This sort of information is part of medical history and is confidential. Parents are well aware that there are people around who never have been vaccinated ... it's just the way it is.

What medieval disease do you think they'll come in with?

Vaccinations are a matter of personal choice and you are not allowed to share confidential medical details of the children you care for.

Surely, if a child has an infectious condition they are excluded until they are better, whether they have been vacinated or not.

If you know you care for an immuno compromised child then you will need to be extra vigilent about preventing ill children coming into contact with that child, but surely sick children should be at home not in childcare.

I dont take children that are not vaccinated, I have it in my Sickness policy.

Every potential Parent I see I email all my policies and Handbook too, on initial enquiry, so that they no this, and can make an informed decision on weather they would visit me or not.

I also do not take children who are not vaccinated.
