My friend is doing adhoc/ regular babysitting for some of the mums at her dd's school. They get someone they know and trust she earns some pin money. She's thinking of taking it a stage further and getting some business cards made up and promoting herself through word of mouth and via the village mag for babysitting and short term childcare Do you think she needs to be crb checked or anything else(she was once but it expired). When does babysitting turn into childare?

Babysitting is exempt from childcare rules, and indeed even private nannies do not have to be CRB checked unless they work for an agency.

However the definition of babysitting is quite specific, it has to be in the child's own home between certain hours.

You are not police checked when you work for sitters agency so no.

sitters dont check to see if the nanny/sitter they are sending has a current crb or first aid Shock

thats awful!!!

Sitters do check your references though and give you an interview, but they give ther impression you are police checked but you are not.

Baby sitters are after 6pm. If it is earlier than this for more than 2 hours it is childminding

Babysitting is 6pm to 2am at the child's own home or anywhere else actually. In the UK childcare between 6pm and 2am is unregulated.

The 2 hour rule only applies when the child is cared for OUTSIDE of their own home. If a child is cared for more than 2 hours at a place they do not live, then it is likely to fall under childminding regulations.

So it's not just the time of day but also the location at which care is provided that need to be considered.
